1.0 out of 5 stars My Daddy Is In Jail, December 7, 2007
This review is from: My Daddy Is in Jail: Story, Discussion Guide, and Small Group Activities for Grades K-5 (Paperback)
The story is printed on the right side and discussion questions are on the left. It is hard to keep the feeling that you are reading a story. It is difficult to get the children to see the story. It would be nicer if the story was all together and the adult could read questions afterward from the back. The best page is page 31 where there is only a simple illustration and words and it much less confusing to young readers. I am also surprised that there are no real pictures included. It is entirely black and white drawings illustrated by children. I think you lose the great story in all the confusion of the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Curriculum for Counselors, April 27, 2010
This review is from: My Daddy Is in Jail: Story, Discussion Guide, and Small Group Activities for Grades K-5 (Paperback)
I have been so impressed with this curriculum for students with incarcerated parents! After running two elementary support groups for students in this situation, I have come to the conclusion that Janet Bender is a genius! All of the questions in the book are very concrete and easy for children to relate to. In addition, the curriculum is very user friendly and easy to follow. Furthermore, I really believe that my students are gaining from the ability to share their "secrets" of what it is like for them to have a parent in jail. This book has lead to many great discussions and sharing activities among the students I work with. I have used this curriculum with student with ages ranging from 6 to 12 years old. They all seem to appreciate that the pictures in the story were drawn by students who were in similar situations.

i work with kids on their social/emotional development at the K-5 level. i have used this book on a 4th grader and a 2nd grader so far and it's a great tool to start conversation for the kids that aren't used to talking.

i recommend it!
