My Daddy Is In Jail,
By
This review is from: My Daddy Is in Jail: Story, Discussion Guide, and Small Group Activities for Grades K-5 (Paperback)
The story is printed on the right side and discussion questions are on the left. It is hard to keep the feeling that you are reading a story. It is difficult to get the children to see the story. It would be nicer if the story was all together and the adult could read questions afterward from the back. The best page is page 31 where there is only a simple illustration and words and it much less confusing to young readers. I am also surprised that there are no real pictures included. It is entirely black and white drawings illustrated by children. I think you lose the great story in all the confusion of the pages.

Amazing Curriculum for Counselors,
This review is from: My Daddy Is in Jail: Story, Discussion Guide, and Small Group Activities for Grades K-5 (Paperback)
I have been so impressed with this curriculum for students with incarcerated parents! After running two elementary support groups for students in this situation, I have come to the conclusion that Janet Bender is a genius! All of the questions in the book are very concrete and easy for children to relate to. In addition, the curriculum is very user friendly and easy to follow. Furthermore, I really believe that my students are gaining from the ability to share their "secrets" of what it is like for them to have a parent in jail. This book has lead to many great discussions and sharing activities among the students I work with. I have used this curriculum with student with ages ranging from 6 to 12 years old. They all seem to appreciate that the pictures in the story were drawn by students who were in similar situations.

I bought this book for my niece during a difficult time for her young children. She has told me it have been very helpful identifying and working through their feelings about their father being in jail. Also, helped them to understand what 'jail' is. Highly recommend this book

The illustrations and much of the content of this story came directly from elementary-aged children. The story and activities invite conversation and expression of feelings while giving caregivers a tool
to aid communication and support. A good resource for parents, counselors, and law enforcement personnel.
