5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who has loved and lost...for all of us!, November 28, 2002
By
Barb McKinney (Kansas City, Kansas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Daddy & Me (Paperback)
Everyone has faced the death of a loved one. This story of a young girl's (11 years old) journey after the death of her father to cancer is uplifting, inspiring, practical, and encouraging. She tells her story, and then gently guides the reader to reflect on "their story" and to live their life in a way that honors their loved one. Although written to help children (specifically) with grief,I can think of dozens of adults I know that need to read her wisdom! She writes, "I am Daddy's legacy. This means that I am a part of him that lives on. Daddy was very courageous. If I live my life in a way that honors him, then he lives on in honor. Daddy wouldn't want me to become bitter and withdrawn over his death. He wanted me to have a good and happy life when he was alive, and he wouldn't want that to change now. So even though my life has changed, the values that Daddy taught me haven't. Daddy's death was a tragedy. But, it doesn't mean that my life is over. His life inspired me. His determination inspired me. I am so proud that he is my father." This book lifts the spirit. It is a treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars child's perspective, November 22, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: My Daddy & Me (Paperback)
This book is an excellent Christian-centered perspective from a young girl about the death of her father.

Her life changes since her father's death are felt through her upfront and frank discussions about how a young child can cope and what helps and what doesn't. An excellent book for children or parents of children who have had a parent or close friend die.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the child in all of us...hope....peace, November 14, 2002

Judy Williams (Tonawanda, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Daddy & Me (Paperback)
With the innocence of childhood embracing her, Lauren allows us all to accompany her and her mom and dad on what can only be termed a most incredible journey. A book is filled with beautiful, original illustrations, poetry, and hopeful insights into what it is like to lose someone you love. It offers very genuine reflections, in detail, of the good things that happen when someone dies. It also describes what is not so helpful at that time.
The book is dedicated to Lauren's dad. With the honesty and innocence of an 11 year old, she proudly tells you of the courage both her dad and mom showed in facing the disease. Together as a family, they share a strength, both physical and spiritual, with readers of all ages. A tremendous resource for anyone facing these challenges in life. A "must have" book for parents, schools, support groups, hospitals, churches....This is an amazing faith journey written and illustrated by a very gifted young lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartlifting Read, September 10, 2003
By
James Cherry (Mission, KS United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Daddy & Me (Paperback)
An excellent book for both adults and children. Lauren presents an altruistic view of events preceding, during and after the loss of her father Mark, to cancer. The simplicity and clarity of her thoughts are expressed so vividly, I cried and laughed by the profound reality of the precious memories surrounding this 11 year old girl and the bonds which loving families are made of. Supported by the loving committment of her mother Kenda, all readers will experience the comfort they share with God in dealing with such a tragedy. A "must read" for hospice families, schools, churches, the community and those who try to comfort loved ones in the wake of life's inevitable end and the memorialization and celebration of a new beginning.

This book was such a blessing! It is fresh and honest. Even though it is a book about grief, it is NOT depressing. It is not just for children, but for anyone who has lost a loved one, or who wishes to help someone else with their grief. It is a must read!!
