About the Author

With careers ranging from preschool teacher to psych nurse, JULIE LABELLE's most challenging role was mothering her three young children during her Marine husband's deployments, and then years later standing by when their son enlisted and deployed with the Marines. Julie wrote the activities in My Dad's Deployment based on things she felt she should have done with her children, but didn't, during deployments.  With 20/20 hindsight, Julie gets a do-over in life by sharing activities for young children that will be loved by parents and children alike as they face deployment together.

Born overseas to multicultural parents, CHRISTINA RODRIGUEZ grew up as an Air Force brat, moving from place to place. Christina loved to draw and paint. She was awarded a generous scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design where she earned a fine arts degree in illustration. Christina is an award-winning children s book illustrator.

I bought this book for my 3.5 year old daughter a week after my husband deployed to Iraq. I wish that I had thought about things before he left as some of the activities in this book deal with before you leave and the day you leave...but it still is very good. I've started recommending it to all my friends who are going through the same thing. My daughter is definitely on the younger side for this book as it has dot to dots, writing sections and other sections that are mildly advanced for her. We still make it work and I'm ver happy that we have purchased this. I actually wish that the Support Services on base would supply these books because I think they would be a great addition to pre-deployment packages for kids!

As a retired teacher and now a private tutor, I have seen many instances where change in family circumstances has deeply affected a child; especially in military families. This book offers an opportunity for discussion with the child within a positve and structured framework. The artwork is delightful and the book's message progresses in an exceptionally well planned format.
I will be sending my daughter and son-in-law several copies to share with their two children and other military families in Olympia, WA.

No one ever hopes to use a book like this, but if the need ever arises, THIS is the book to have! I actually got this originally for my niece/nephews since their dad is getting ready to deploy for the first time in their lives, but I actually liked the book so much that I got another one for our family. It gives great ideas for kids on not just during deployment, but before and after too. A must have for ANY military family who has the chance of going through a deployment!

Got this book for my four year old. We haven't done many of the activities yet but I have flipped through the entire book. It is perfect and will really create lasting memories. This book is for sure for younger children. It reminds me of a coloring and activity book. Most of the activities involve drawing and coloring pictures. But others are recommendations on how to explain things to the child through an activity.

My husband recently deployed. Before he left we were trying to figure out how best to prepare our 4 and 2 year olds for Daddy being away for so long. I found this book and bought it a couple months before he left. Honestly, my 2 year old hasn't gotten much out of it, probably because he doesn't really comprehend what is happening. Our 4 year old daughter had a wonderful time working on the activities with my husband. Although, she is a little young for some of the activities, they made the most of it. It helped her to understand where Daddy was going and why. Most importantly it helped to reassure her that he loves her and is not abandoning her. The book is great and would probably be that much better for an older child.

I purchased this book for my 2 and 3 years old boys before their Dad was going to leave on a year long deployment. I found a lot of deployment resources were a little too advanced for their ages but this one fit the bill perfectly. It has a variety of activities, coloring pages, and worksheets to help very young children grasp the concept of deployment and understand what it happening as well as building a sense of pride in their Dad's service. I would recommend getting this a little before the deployment as there are some activities at the beginning for the child to do with the deploying parents as well. Its also great this comes in a "Mom's Deployment" version as well.

Though just a teensy bit mature for my 2.5-year old, this is a GREAT resource with plenty of variety of simple and wonderful activities for kids and caregivers experiencing deployments. I especially love the time capsule idea, and even the connect the dots activities are great. My son loves it.
