Grade 6 Up–Writers from the United States, Great Britain, and Australia are represented in this collection; interestingly, all have similar stories to tell. The title story is written from the point of view of an adolescent whose divorced dad plays with a band, Bucket of Snot, and is seldom there for his son. The selections cover myriad complex paternal dynamics including a devoted dad, a workaholic, a homosexual, a deceased father, and one from the future. The stories are funny, truthful, poignant, and bittersweet. Each protagonist has specific needs but the common thread is that each boy wants to spend more time with his father. This book gives teens a realistic picture of the variety of father/son relationships.

Gr. 7-10. Twelve short stories by YA authors, both famed and less well known, explore the primal connection between fathers and sons: the demands and expectations both impose on the other, the jockeying for love and respect, the unspoken need both have for the other's approval. Authors such as Ron Koertge, Tim Wynne-Jones, and Francis McCrickard explore father-son relationships in moving stories set in the past, present, and future. From bird watching to bird slaughter, divorced dads to gay dads, and close conversations to clandestine meetings on street corners, the situations and characters in each of these stories convey the depth and breadth of what it means to be a male in a family. A strong collection.
