5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new Bible
I purchased this book after having used an early daily Bible put out by Our Sunday Visitor, the _One Year Bible Catholic Edition_ (NRSV), and I much prefer this Bible, _My Daily Catholic Bible_. Since it uses the RSV-CE there's no inclusive language, which means that the meaning of Messianic psalms isn't muddled as it is in the NRSV. This Bible is truly Catholic, as...

3.0 out of 5 stars Arbitrary order of books of the bible
Short daily excerpts are provided with a selection from the Old Testament and the New Testament from the Revised Standard Version, Catholic edition of the bible. Starting with Jan. 1, the selections are Genesis 1-2 and Mark 1:1-13 and those books continue until completion with an excerpt from Exodus (1-2) starting on Jan. 20 and an excerpt (Romans 1:1-17) starting on...

This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
This Bible is truly Catholic, as well. Protestant Bible through the Year books use the Protestant Old Testament Canon, not giving all the books found in the Catholic canon, and the _One Year Bible Catholic Edition_ merely adds the deuterocanocal books at the end, but this Bible includes them in their proper place.

Furthermore, _My Daily Catholic Bible_ lists the saint of the day, if there is one, and provides a quote from that saint or a from another saint or patristic source which matches the theme of the readings. Thus, each days readings are prefaced with a spiritual saying the reader can ponder on in connection with the Scripture. The Bible's editors estimate it takes 20 minutes to read each day's selections (several chapters from the OT, a smaller section from the NT), but it will take fast readers less time.

This Bible goes through the Old Testament books in the expected order, but one surprise for me was that the New Testament selections don't follow the usual order. Rather than beginning with Matthew and ending with Revelations, the editor arranged the New Testament readings so that you begin with Mark, followed by Romans and Hebrews, then Matthew, followed by more epistles, etc. before the next Gospel. My suspicion is that this may have been done so that the Gospels are more evenly distributed throughout the year, or to follow a certain theological logic which would present the reader with the most important aspects of the New Testament message right away, through the Gospel narrative, then Romans and Hebrews, both of which are theologically "weighty" epistles. In any event, I don't find the order disruptive, but I did want to warn possible purchasers so that they wouldn't be suprised by the ordering of the New Testament readings.

One drawback of the Bible is that while it includes the textual notes of the RSV, it does not include commentary. Personally, I'd like a daily bible that gave some commentary for each day's readings, but as far as I know, such a Bible does not exist yet for Catholics. In the meantime, this is the best daily Bible I've seen, and I recommend it strongly.

Edited to add: since I began using this volume, it has developed some serious binding problems with pages falling out. I hope Our Sunday Visitor improves the binding!

5.0 out of 5 stars HIS word for busy Catholics on the go, May 22, 2005
This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
What I like about this Bible is:

1. The translation used (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) that allows me to read all 73 books of the Catholic Bible.

2. The format (short opening quote from a Saint, Old Testament reading followed by New Testament reading) that allows each day's reading to be accomplished in just about 20 minutes.

3. I also like the fact that it is just the Bible text itself without notes or commentary. Just straight forward and uncomplicated...which I think is what is needed for this type of devotional...other types of Bibles have thier place for thier purposes.

There are blocks that you can check-mark to keep track of the days you have read if you choose to use them. Each day I've read leaves me feeling closer to God and gives me food for thought as I continue my day. An excellent resource for catholics who want to read the Bible in it's entirety as part of thier devotional practices...

This is a great way to read through the entire Bible in one year. The RSVCE translation is also approved by the Church. I encourage every Catholic Christian to buy this Bible and develop a daily discipline of reading God's Holy Word. It will change your life for the better!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best so far, February 9, 2006

This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
There are many advantages to reading the Bible each day. This is the best one for Catholics - the translation is good, and the format is simple. It does not usually take 20 minutes to read that daily section.

As someone else pointed out, the New Testament selections are in a different order than usual. That's not a bad thing, but I would like to know the reason for this order. It may be when the various epistles and gospels were written (except we start with Mark - maybe they wanted to be sure that we began with a gospel).

What is missing? An index or table of contents listing the daily readings would be handy. A commentary would be a welcome addition.

What a wonderful way to journey through the Bible in a year's time! This is a wonderful translation and the daily readings are very "do-able"....about 15-20 minutes per day. I would highly recommend this Bible...Would be an excellent gift for a Confirmation candidate or someone going through RCIA, or would make a fabulous wedding gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Habit-forming...., March 8, 2007

This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
Even though I already own several Bibles, I purchased this one for myself because of the format....both Old and New Testament readings selected for every day of the year makes it very simple and convenient to truly read the whole Bible. It was important to me also, that it is a Catholic Bible. I like this Bible so much, that I bought one for my parents and my sons as well, and they all love it. Would definitely recommend it to any Catholic who wants to read the entire Bible but is intimidated by the seemingly impossible task.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent format for goal-oriented readers, March 8, 2007
This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
I bought this Bible to help me keep my New Year's Resolution: to read the entire Bible in one year (a lofty goal!). The readings are short (about 6-10 minutes) and I think the phrase "20 Minute Readings" (on the cover) refers to read-study-meditate time, not just the reading time. I highly recommend this Bible to anyone wanting to read the Bible in a year. I never thought it was possible to read the whole thing but with the help of this wonderful Bible, I am right on track and I am confident that I will reach my goal. After all, it's only 10 minutes a day!

I have bought all kinds of Bibles over the years that I never read through because of how overwhelming the task is. I also have printed many "Bible in a Year" sheets, and still have failed. This Bible makes it impossible to fail. I have found so much peace each day with this Bible that I am buying a bunch of them to hand out to family and friends. It is well worth the money, even if you have other Bibles at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great year with the bible, December 3, 2007

This review is from: My Daily Catholic Bible: 20-Minute Daily Readings (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) (Paperback)
This is the first bible that really makes it easy and inspiring to read. There are no footnotes or explanations which I feel is good. It encourages further research on the readers part if they desire that. For me, it has been absolutely terrific! Just enough at one sitting- and if you miss a day or two- it is not too difficult to catch up. I am going to give several of these books this year for Christmas to friends and relatives because it it PERFECT!!! Thank you for creating such a wonderful and necessary way to read the entire bible. We are called to have read God's word at least once in our lifetime. Whether we understand it all, is another subject, but I feel that God, in His infinite wisdom and with the gift of the Holy Spirit can bring understanding to anyone-even me! I would recommend this to anyone beginning to read the bible for the first time and to those who have studied it for years.
