A good book, but not as good as the other review says, October 7, 2009
This review is from: My Daily Exercise: 365 Tactical Tests to Improve Your Chess (Paperback)
Yes, indeed it was a very good book of chess problems, but not as perfect as the other review says, which is the only one review so far, so I wanted to point out the negative sides, too. The other review says the book was challenging even for a 2000+ player. Yes, there were some hard problems in the book that I couldn't solve, but most of the problems vere quite easy, and of the 365 problems there were even some "checkmate in one". Mostly the problems were - trap a queen, or a forced(!) checkmate in 2-3-4 moves. That's why I got a bit bored with the book; while I was quite excited during the first half of problems, I did the other half of the book almost mechanically. Only these 5%-10% of the problems that were really challenging, that made me interested in this book.
For a chess problem book, the problem itself is that in a book exercice you already know that there always IS some solution, unlike in a real play. So, when you look at the book position and when you find the idea and the weaknesses in opponent's position, the combination and the moves appear quite easily. The problem is that in a real play, the true combinations whith a clear and completely winning solution appear less often than that. In this book, there were only two or three exercises with "fake solution" where you have the idea but it doesn't work because the opponent can defend, so you should choose something else.
Also I didn't like the exercises where the position is already winning but you just have to checkmate the oppononent as soon as possible. For some other exercises, there are many ways how to checkmate, but the author gives the fastest way to checkmate as a better solution than the other one (how can one path to checkmate be "better" than the other?)
And finally, there were some exercises in the book which had some printing problems. In one exercise there was one piece missing.
Nevertheless, a good exercise book, just too many exercises were centered around two themes "forced checkmate in some moves" and "trap a queen". And some of the hardest exercises were really for 2000+ level, but surely not the book as a whole.
I give it 4 stars because there exist few chess exercise books for the intermediate level (up to 2000 rating), and so this is still one of the best exercise books you can buy, because they are not very many on the market.

Gets you sharp, ready for a bit of dirty 20 to 1., September 8, 2007
This review is from: My Daily Exercise: 365 Tactical Tests to Improve Your Chess (Paperback)
He has a new format for the answers: he jumbles them so that you cannot sneak a peak. The problems are quite challenging right from the jump, even for a 2000+ player such as myself. And some will leave you exclaiming with awe. Equal or better than any tactics book currently available.
