I actually thought it was very good, BTD's debut comes straight forward and solid, great melodic metal band, dont think of them much of death, no Fast pace drumming and fast solos/riffs but they have their own trademark sound, they have more of a mellow sound so upbeat but they have good hooks and riffs, i cant really compare them. The use of keyboards when in use aren't cheesy/happy toned which i hate (personally) they have a very serious and straight forward sound -very original. No its not SPECTACULAR or STELLAR but a good listen driving around or just relaxing when your in the mood for something less DEATH METAL like, groovy but still with the growls and screams, an interesting band im definitely getting their other cd's......i guess you can say its all a matter of taste....and opinion, this was just mines.

Before The Dawn Lies A New Breed Of Metal,

This CD would be my introduction to Before The Dawn and like most listeners these days I approach new things with equal levels of curiosity and hesitation. When I find a band that I have never heard of before I am sometimes afraid of what will be discovered when I play the CD for the first time. However when I placed the copy of "My Darkness" in the changer this was not to be the case. Beginning with a slight intro piece the groove laid out in "Unbrakeable" just hooked me instantly. When the dirty growls of Toumas Saukkonen came in I was sold. The CD has many different things going on in its favor. They use both styles of singing mixing the clean with the dirty to some effect. Most of the instrumentation is programmed and under the direction of Saukkonen making this project pretty much under his command almost like Trent Reznor would do with his group Nine Inch Nails. While this tended to lean towards the Gothic end for me, I felt a lot of Doom mixed with Black was an inspiration as well in its composition. The riffs are nice and heavy and the drumming solid throughout this mostly catchy CD (but the drums are programmed). I felt compelled to listen to the whole CD a few times before I could come up with words on it and key tracks for me were "My Darkness", "Unbrakeable" and "Take My Pain". I do admit a sense of lying to readers though since I pretty much enjoyed the whole piece more than just a few referenced tracks.
As this CD is an import, it might be wise to search some back bins or look for a copy on Amazon.com so you might be able to get it a little cheaper. It truly is worth looking into for those that lean towards the Gothic edge. I look forward to the groups follow-up and hope it is as good as this one was. The booklet inside the digipak CD case includes all the lyrics which I always enjoy. This is a recommended piece.

Whatever, don't pay any attention to them. This cd is good. Obviously it is not for people who like Slayer or something like that.
This cd is good and fun to listen to for everybody who knows what a descent melody with a nice drumbeat is. so there. if you are one of those people, buy this. just go to their website and listen to the samples. you will come right back here and buy both of their cds.!!!!!

Nothing great/special.,

I had originally written a review giving this album five stars, but I deleted it after considering how stupid it really was (it being my review). Must have been drunk.
To be honest, this album really isn't unique, special or original to me. It's very metal, with shades of nu-metal (not saying that's a bad thing of course) and prog influences along the way. Some of the effects the guitars and keyboards are _very_ cool, however this and this only simply does not justify a great album to me. It's forgettable and while it is catchy at times, does nothing to make me feel the way some other music does. I have to admit the songwriting is somewhat good of what I've heard and what I can remember correctly, however it's nothing outstanding. It isn't starkly predictable. The drumming is laid back at times on a fast-paced album like this, suiting it perfectly. And at times, it's Martin Lopez-esque (albeit not as amazing). I wouldn't go as far as to call it a bad album, but it's just boring, for a lack of a better word. Mediocre. |
