A wonderful book! Delinsky grabs your interest immediately and keeps it going 'til the last page. I recently started reading her when someone gave me her book "Suddenly" and read 8 more by her. "Coast Road" and "Three Wishes" are also great. This one is about a mother that didn't bond with her daughters while they were growing up, and why,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
Delinsky made me care about the character's and root for their happiness. If you like novels, definately check this out but if you've never read her then you must start with "The Woman Next Door" or "A Woman's Place" or even "Coast Road".

A wonderful book! Delinsky grabs your interest immediately and keeps it going 'til the last page. I recently started reading her when someone gave me her book "Suddenly" and read 8 more by her. "Coast Road" and "Three Wishes" are also great. This one is about a mother that didn't bond with her daughters while they were growing up, and why, and all the regrets on both sides, as they all reluctantly come together for Mom's 70th birthday. It's a great love story, but much more than that. Expect to shed a tear, and a few smiles. A great book! One you will want to keep on your library shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Done!, December 29, 2001
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were extremely well-rounded and fleshed out. After reading the novel, they stayed with me as if they were old friends.

The story was realistic and held my attention. I read the book in a day and a half because I couldn't put it down. The dialogue was so natural. I truly felt like Barbara could have been recounting a true story word for word. The relationships between the characters are 3-dimensional, and I understood all the character's reasons for making the decisions they made. I cried, I laughed a little, and I felt alot.

This book revealed some truths about how many people live their lives in fear of being unaccepted and unloved, and how some do not know how to show love or know when they are loved.

4.0 out of 5 stars The daughters found out that their mother was human too, October 11, 2000
Another great book by Ms. Delinsky. It's funny how, as children, we imagine our parents a certain way----mainly because they are our guidance and our disciplinarians-----but when we are grown up and they let us see their true human events in their lives, it's at times crushing and at times comical and at times refreshing. This is a wonderful story, and as a 50 year old woman, I surely can relate to it as well as understand some of the perplexing attitudes and looks I get from my twin, 16 year old daughters. This book will make you think about relationships of long ago.Read it, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching and truthful look at family relationships, December 7, 1998
By A Customer
When I read "For My Daughters" I couldn't help but compare the life experiences of the sisters with that of my four sisters. How precious little we truly know of our siblings inner feelings until we are thrown together and united for a common purpose. We all remember what our sisters were like when we were little. It is a remarkable experience to renew those relationships as grown women and come to love and appreciate each other. Barbara Delinsky captures all the emotions of the sisters learning about each other all over again, while learning more about themselves. An excellent book!

I couldn't put this book down! A friend told me to read this book and I was so glad I did-it's wonderful! I am one of three daughters and I could relate to the characters in this story. Delinsky's descriptions of Maine and the flowers in the garden, etc. I just felt like I was there. She is a very wonderful storyteller.

This book by Barbara Delinsky is a moving, charming fast read about the coming together of three daughters under false pretenses.
The Mother they all thought had treated them poorly redeems herself in a very interesting and thoughtful way.
There is so much that anyone reading this can relate to.
Ms Delinsky writes very well and is a wonderful story teller.
I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars storyteller, October 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As daughters, we tend to forget that our parents, mother in this case, was young once and had passionate feelings just like us. Three daughters are brought together, by their mother, to learn about her youth and lost love. Also, once the secret is brought into the light, their childhood makes much more sense. They had felt their mother was cold to them and their father. They didn't know how marriages were handled when her parents were young and what was expected of young women in a different time. All in all, a good read. I enjoyed it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mother-Daughter Read!, March 5, 2006
This review is from: For My Daughters (Hardcover)
Barbara Delinsky knows women. She is one of the best modern writers for revealing the emotions involved in relationships. The women in this story could be your mother and sisters. They display the underside of sibling rivalry and the misunderstanding of mothers. The layers of the family are peeled away like an onion. The surprises in the plot are page-turners. This is Delinsky at her best.
