1916. This work contains autobiographical notes Carpenter began in the summer of 1890. These notes, in a very casual way, and with long intervals in between, were continued down to the time of this work. It is composed in a somewhat disjointed fashion and the discerning reader will perceive slight differences in style and outlook in its different portions.
