Book Description

February 6, 2007
Finney Bleak lives in a world of horror--literally. His family are ghosts, his classmates are monsters, and Finney is the most normal kid in school. But within the halls of Mephisto Prep, normal is the new weird and Finney dangles from the lowest rung of the social evolutionary ladder. Then along comes Jenny. Smart. Beautiful. And totally into Finney. Only problem is, she's kind of dead. Jenny may be the ethereal object of Finney's affection, but their corporal differences keep them apart. As if young romance wasn't awkward enough, try getting frisky with a ghost. Just how far will Finney go to be with his true love? Let's just say not even Death can stand in his way!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As the youngest member in the long and unfortunate Bleak bloodline, Finney has few pressures that weigh more heavily upon him than his impending, and most likely, cataclysmic death. The Bleak family is notorious for its members meeting their demise: Margaret Bleak, a magician's assistant was literally sawed in half, and Archibald Bleak, a zookeeper, was smothered by manure. Downtrodden and consumed by his fear of death, Finney attracts nothing but trouble at his high school and pines for his lost love, Jenny. Finney and Jenny met many months ago at a traveling carnival where they shared time on the Ferris wheel, were bored by a puny roller coaster and fell in love on the Bucket of Blood. How will Finney find his lost love and what will he do when he realizes that, like most of his extended family, Jenny is quite dearly departed? This is the first series created by Wight, who is best known for his work on the television show The O.C. Wight has an uncanny knack for capturing the ferocity of teenage emotions in both ink and words. His artwork is poppy (assuredly the most enjoyable aspect of this book) and the fast-paced story will appeal to teenage readers. (Feb.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A MONSTROUSLY BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY, March 3, 2007
This review is from: My Dead Girlfriend, Volume 1 (Comic)
Several of the blurbs on the back cover of My Dead Girlfriend #1 praise the book as whimsical. Too me, whimsical seems to sell this very unique title from Tokyopop woefully short. I think there is a very strong message in the book that speaks to kids who deal with loneliness and isolation in their daily lives that goes well beyond whimsical.

Finney Bleak is from a family whose claim to fame is the spectacular way in which they died. From being eaten by a great white shark, to meat grinder accidents, to being electrified in a carnival tunnel of love ride. The Bleaks sure no how to go to the great beyond. The trouble is that they seldom go to the great beyond. They just hang around the Bleak home as ghosts, usually bothering poor Finney with late night parties.

Finney's world is like a Universal Horror film come to life. His school is filled with monsters such as vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein-like monsters, witches, and creatures from some lost lagoon...and they all seem to have it in for poor Finney whom, in a world of monsters, is remarkably ordinary.

One day, things finally start to turn around for Finney. At the town carnival he meets the beautiful Jenny. They have a wonderful day riding rides and pigging out and even the death of Finney's parents doesn't seem to put a damper on things...after all, they are still home as ghosts now! Finney thinks things are finally looking up until he makes the discovery that beautiful, sweet Jenny just happens to be dead!

Eric Wright's enjoyable tale is so very different the than typical Manga published by Tokyopop. First, it's not done in Manga style at all but more in an animated cartoon style which perfectly complements the story. Wright shows that even for the most lonely, there is always a perfect match out there for them...even if they are dead.
