Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Latter-day Sherlockians devise more and more elaborate premises to justify writing additional tales starring the inimitable Holmes. This collection rests on the assumption that a crusade by one Angus Maclaren to prove that Holmes was not a secret agent for the imperial German government not only was successful in its original aim, but also established that Holmes and Watson were, in fact, the same man. Along the way, Maclaren, so the premise goes, found this baker's dozen of unpublished stories, here "edited" by David Hammer. Among many gems, there is "The Matter of the Poisoned Bridegroom," in which a young man dies an excruciating death, and Holmes is called upon to clear the accused wife of murder. Fans of the Conan Doyle's Holmes stories will find that Hammer's well-concocted, cleverly plotted tales successfully evoke the ambience, tone, and style of the originals. Entertaining reading for Baker Street loyalists. Emily Melton

Review

Hammer's essays and articles highlight Sherlock Holmes' previously unpublished cases, packing in Holmes-style mysteries which any Doyle fan will find satisfyingly authentic. An excellent collection of intriguing instances, this is recommended for any Holmes enthusiast who just can't get enough. -- Midwest Book Review

2.0 out of 5 stars A slender volume of stories with slender plots, August 12, 2000
This review is from: My Dear Watson: Being the Annals of Sherlock Holms (Paperback)
At various points in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes berates Watson for the written versions of his adventures, feeling that Watson has produced sensationalised accounts of what could have been examinations of the deductive process.

Possibly Holmes would have been happier with the twelve stories in this slender volume.

While the deductions and so forth are fine and well, they generally lack the most important elements of the Holmes stories: human interest and conflict. It is easy to sit back and observe these stories dispassionately, because they lack any passion.

The closest Mr. Hammer comes to providing a true continuataion of Doyle's writing is in the last, best and longest of the stories, "The Matter of the Furnival Curse". It is in this story that the characters come closest to achieving some semblence of humanity.

The book is very well presented, but good packaging doesn't make up for a lack of substantial content.
