5.0 out of 5 stars After a while it's great, August 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: My Degeneration (Audio CD)
I first heard of Flashlight Brown after finiding them on cdnow.com. I wasn't sure what to think when I first heard them but they had a different sound that wasn't like things that are out now. I went to the cd store and got it for 10 bucks which is never bad. At first I really didn't like the cd, but after a couple listens it grows on you and now it's one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Partying + talent + nerd-core goodness = Flashlight Brown, April 24, 2003

Fun, raw energy and suave are what make Flashlight Brown an on-stage riot and their first release on Hollywood Records, "My Degeneration" one of the best albums of 2003. Packed with eleven tracks of quotable lines, catchy tunes and upbeat riffs, this CD proves Flashlight to be anything than just another generic 3-chord pop punk band.

Not often does a band display as much lyrical creativity and diversity as this Canadian nerd-core quartet who sings just about any and everything from CPU troubleshooting, D & D and elementary school gender confusion to of course, girls. With a comedic narrative style similar to Nerf Herder's, Flashlight uses vivid images:

"Midnight, torchlight down in the haunted cave/Get some platinum the D.M. will turn the page/Check out my thief he's got the black shield/Check out my sickly cave tan" (#1, Ready to Roll)

... gives descriptive flashbacks:

"Figured it'd be fine when I hit grade nine/And I'd grow a big beard really soon/Till the first day of gym when I met Father Tim/And he sent me to the girl's change room" (#7, Praise the Day)

...and sings about love, in the matter of anything but whiney-emo:

"Cops are asking questions but I don't care/Doing time will prove my love is true/She said 'Hey you psycho get the *** away from me!'/I couldn't deny that in the end I'll only make you cry" (#6, I'll Only Make You Cry, which is uber catchy and my personal favourite)

There you have it. "My Degeneration" is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates good clean witty fun, and music that you can sing along and rock out to.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of...., June 6, 2004
This review is from: My Degeneration (Audio CD)
Flashlight Brown are back with this ear shatteringly good album, My Degeneration.

Few people actually know what this album really is. Most think that it is packed with new songs. The real answer is that the album is more like A Best of.. cd. Almost all the songs have appeared on their previous cds.

Don't let this fool you though. This is an absolutely fantastic cd with some crackily good songs. Although their songs may have appeared previously Flashlight Brown has added some extra riffs, a few more back up vocals, and a lyric touchup. The result is a cracking album with fast paced songs such as "A Freak", anthem's for the modern day teenage like "Looking Away" and music thats just plain good "Patricia".

You really can't get music this good these days so seize this album while you still can!

This review is from: My Degeneration (Audio CD)
This cd is awesome, I found out about the band when i bought tickets to an all-american rejects show, They, along with Moyion city sountrack opened, they are a great band. This cd is full of songs that are actually different from everyone else, they have a unique sound, and with matt and fil's added vocals it is perfect for everyone. I recommend picking it up as soon as you can, you will be very very glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars FLB Review, May 5, 2003
This review is from: My Degeneration (Audio CD)
My degeneration, a highly addictive cd. From the first time I heard the name flashlight brown mentioned at a treble charger concert, i've been hooked. This album is great, comparable to their previoius cds, but this time its on a major label. There songs are melodic, with catchy lyrics about outsiders looking on the inside.. My personal favs are "Loose the Shades" and "Praise the Day" For $, you can't loose

Somewhere between The Beatles and Rancid you will find the band Flashlight Brown. I have seen them play a few times and their live shows are amazing. They are not exactly pop punk but they do appeal to a wide audience. I am a big fan of the band and I know they make it big so I know I wont be able to keep them all for myself. The guys are all super nice and they are canadian too! My fave song on the album is "I'll only make you cry" but in truth they all rock. The cd is high energy and great for teens who are just realizing that yea life...and it is so funny that it does. The cd is worth the low price and then some. GET IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite CD, April 29, 2003
By
This review is from: My Degeneration (Audio CD)
Flashlight Brown's new CD, My Degeneration is without a doubt one of my favourite CDs. Every song is different, but always enjoyable. There are hints of influences by various artists throughout the CD, but if you like the All American Rejects, you will definately love this CD. Flashlight Brown has their own sound, however, and it is very unique and you can't help but rock out to it. "Lose The Shades" is my favourite song on this CD, but it's hard to pick just one!!
