My Dog Skip DVD Review: Highly recommended!,
By
This review is from: My Dog Skip (DVD)
I didn't watch the movie in the theater because I figured that it's one of those children movies and I probably won't enjoy it. After reading about three reviews on Amazon.com and the good reviews from the viewers (dog lovers) out there, I had to give it a try.My wife and myself watched the movie with our two dogs sitting next to us. We love our dogs but I wanted to watch the movie not because of the story of a boy and his dog (I could have watched "Ben") but because I wanted to see this touching story and the relationship one has with their pets, that's what I was interested in. After we were done watching, we were both in tears. I looked at my two dogs and it reminded me of how much these pets are a part of our lives. The storyline of a kid who is bullied and how his dog helps him through his young life and eventually gains friends to the last 15 minutes which will nearly shatter your heart. An emotional roller coaster this movie turned out to be. Ok...as for the DVD, the audio is mostly dialogue but the rear speakers are used pretty well. Especially during the baseball game. The video is clear and the colors are good. As for the special features, you get two feature-length audio commentaries. One with Frankie Muniz and animal trainer Mathilde DeCagney and the other with director Jay Russell. It was cool to see the deleted scenes and part of me wishes they left it in and I wish the director elaborated why he removed them from the movie. And of course, the ever loveable trailer and scene selections which I don't count as special features (all DVD's should have those). All in all, "My Dog Skip" is a wonderful movie. I recommend this movie to all dog lovers. Those who dislike canines or any pets would probably not watch this movie anyway... Highly recommended for the dog loving fans out there and remember to have the tissue box nearby.

It gets rarer and rarer today that a film is made that includes a true story, no foul language, no sex and still is entertaining and suitable for children. If you have extremely sensitive children, however, there is a very violent act perpetrated against the star, Skip. It is very disturbing, but sadly was a true event in the life of this dog and his boy. If you have a child who is overly sensitive, you may want until they are a little older before letting them see this film due to the one scene. Despite the disturbing scene I mentioned, this is still a feel-good movie, lump-in-throat not-withstanding. Even the most stony-hearted viewer will have at least a tear in their eye during some of the scenes. The film shows the growing relationship between a boy and his dog, his father, mother and friends. Taking place in the 1940s when most people had big families, an only-child's only companion is an adorable Jack Russell Terrier puppy named Skip. Skip is quite a unique character and everyone in town knows him, loves him and respects him. This was a highly enjoyable film and a good bonding movie for a family and children. You don't need to own a dog or have children to enjoy the film, however. If you hate dogs, however, this is not a film you should even consider. I found this a highly enjoyable film that exceeded my expectations. It earns a 5 star rating because of the convincing acting and a well-rounded family film that is actually suitable to show to every member of the family.

How could anyone not LOVE this movie?,
This review is from: My Dog Skip (DVD)
By no means is "My Dog Skip" a perfect film. There are several segments that are ridiculously far fetched, the theme of race is only slightly touched on, and certain characters appear cliched and flawed. Having said that, however, I can rightfully say now that anyone who does not admit to even remotely liking this movie is an absolute fuddy-duddie! This brilliantly executed film touches on so many emotional levels that I not only found myself laughing throughout much of the story, but crying throughout the movie's final sequence. "My Dog Skip" is not your run of the mill family flick about a boy and his dog. It is instead a beautiful, if not heartbreaking, eulogy to childhood, innocence, and an era of America's past that is sadly lost forever. Though several reviewers have argued otherwise, I found that "My Dog Skip" never fell into a trap of sentimentality due to its honesty and truth. Towards the picture's end, for instance, when the narrator asks "Why in childhood do we wish time to pass so quickly, when in adulthood we wish just the opposite?" I felt as if I had been hit by a ton of bricks. I recommend this film to anyone interested in nursing their inner child, for to watch this movie is to embark on a journey into ones past. To the filmgoer who is willing to dismiss cynicism and simply sit back and enjoy this gem of a picture, "My Dog Skip" will undoubtedly conjure up a plethora of memories, both painful, and cherished. As you might guess, I flat out loved this movie, and cannot say enough good things about it. Therefore, I make no apologies for giving this movie 5 stars.

A real dog of a movie?,
By
This review is from: My Dog Skip [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this movie onboard a plane on the way to New York. It must have been rather amusing to the flight attendants, walking down the aisle, seeing people looking up at the monitors, blubbering with tears running down their face. And I can tell you, that's exactly the way it was. A woman on my row had not "rented" the headset, so she couldn't listen in, and she kept asking me "what's happening, what's happening!". Once I could compose myself, I'd look around and see people just looking devastated. At the end, everyone would agree "great movie!". I had no idea about this movie going in, other than it might fill a few hours of the flight. This is a VERY GOOD movie, everyone. It tells a nice story, it envokes the era, it mixes in some complex themes (segregation, hometown hero goes to war and returns...?, loss). And, it does it all in a package that, Yes, the whole family can watch. As others have said, be prepared with your favorite box of tissue, this one will wreck you, and you'll like it.

I don't think that anyone who has seen this film, can say a bad thing about it. The story involves a young boy (Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz) and his friendship with his dog Skip. He doesn't have many friends, so he becomes best friends with his new dog. The story takes place in a Mississippi suburb during WW2. His friendship with his dog teaches him many things along the way. It's a comming of age story about growing up as a kid and having one true friend, then looking back at your childhood. This story is very touching, and anyone sensitive will definately need some kleenex because it is an uplifting teer jerker. It's good to see that a movie doesn't need sex, violence, or language to be genuinely good (although the movie has a couple of mild words, and stuff that may scare children under 5). On the DVD, there are 2 nice commentaries. One by Frankie Muniz and the dog trainer, and another by the director. Very informitive and it increaces the replay value of the movie. If you're looking for a good, uplifting, innocent story: buy this movie, you won't be dissapointed. Highly reccomended.

Please Rent This Movie, "My Dog Skip",
A Kid's Review
This review is from: My Dog Skip [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Please at least rent this movie because you will probably watch it more than once. I love this movie, it is one of my favorite movies... My other favorite movie is "A Walk To Remember". This movie is about a boy and his dog. The boy's name is Willie, and the dog's name is Skip. Willie is a boy who only has one friend, a high school jock named Dink who lives next door, who has to leave to serve in World War II. Skip helps Willie make friends, follows him around all of the time, even got Willie a girlfriend. My favorite thing about Skip though, is that he is Willie's best friend. After you see this movie you'll want to give your dog a hug or if you don't have one you will wish you had a dog as great as Skip. I am almost 13 now, and I still watch this movie over and over again. I hope that you will go out and see this movie soon, or else buy it now. It's my favorite.

A Very Touching Movie,
By
This review is from: My Dog Skip [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My roommate and I sat down to a rental copy of this movie. In her words "if this doesn't move you, you must be a sociopath." I second that thought. This movie got to me, probably because I am an animal lover. We own 4 cats between us, and I hugged them tight after watching this movie. I grew up from the age of 11 with Great Danes, and this reminds me of the love and companionship that we receive from our pets. It also reminded me of the heartbreaking loss we feel when they pass away. Frankie Muniz, Kevin Bacon, Diane Lane, and Luke Wilson all gave great performances. Nice cinematography, good locations, great direction. I never saw this in a movie theater when it came out because I thought it was a "kiddie" film and not for me. Boy, was I wrong. A very sweet and touching film, especially for those of us that have had dogs in our lives at one time or another.
