Rick Trevino returns (El vuelve!)!!!!!,
This review is from: In My Dreams (Audio CD)
Yeah, okay, so Spanish isn't my forte, and I can't do any of those fancy appostrophe things on the Internet. Sorry. Let's just get on to this CD.Rick Trevino is an unusual sort. His nineties music was basically radio-friendly garbage; yet his voice lent it a cool edge. "Bobby Ann Mason," "Running Out of Reasons to Run," and "Learning As you Go," for example, helped introduce me into country music. Then he went and did some Spanish stuff (which I haven't heard, I'm ashamed to say). And now he's mixing the two. Really, this CD deserves an extra half star just for this mergance of two sounds; I absolutely loved it, even if Trevino's songwriting leaves a lot to be desired. The lyrics on this CD don't really stand out; the tone, the feel of the music--THAT'S what you notice. Take the title track. I saw the video on CMT not long ago, and though I tuned in half-way through, and though Trevino has changed his appearance slightly, and though his voice has matured a little, I said to myself, "Rick Trevino's back." This song--we're talking "In My Dreams" here--is powerful and emotional, dragging you in and holding you under. The same could be said of the first song, "Overnight Success," though it does it through more upbeat riffs and notes. The last song, "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman," is a remake of pop/rocker Bryan Adam's Hispanic-flavored ballad. Trevino adds his own touch, singing the last chorus in Spanish (actually, it makes you wish the ENTIRE SONG was done in Spanish). I didn't think a Bryan Adams tune could be successfully recorded by someone who borders on traditional country...but then, it appears that I was wrong. Trevino's music IS traditional country. I'll be honest--I see no big radio hits on this record. What I see--or, rather, hear--are ten songs, mixing two genres of music, delving into life and love and hardships. I see--hear--a good time, a man content with his voice and performance. Rick Trevino is an artist who can deliver the goods with satisfactory performance. He may not be an over-the-top, over-achieving performer; we don't want him to be. We like him as he is, because this is what he's best at. IN MY DREAMS is a CD well-worth buying. You'll enjoy it; trust me.

In My Dreams,
This review is from: In My Dreams (Audio CD)
Rick Trevino's "In My Dreams" really was a pleasant surprise. I'm a big fan of Los Super Seven, which lead me to try out a Rick Trevino CD. And this one is actually good enough to rival Los Super 7's impressive output.
The CD is a good mix of classic country mixed with Tex-Mex, Americana, and honky tonk. I love the flameno/gipsy guitars that are sprinkled throughout the album. I was surprised at how much I liked the cover version of "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman". I didn't care that much for the original by Bryan Adams, but Trevino's is spiced up nicely. This CD is produced by Raul Malo of the Mavericks. It definitely sounds like it has his touch on it. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who's a fan of Raul Malo's music and Los Super 7's CD's. Good stuff!

I first saw the In My Dreams video on GAC and new instantly that Raul Malo had something to do with it. That song gave me goosebumps - it's beautiful! I also knew instantly that I had to have the CD. Unfortunately I had to wait several weeks for it's release and I was not disappointed. There is not one or two or three good songs on the CD - ALL the songs are good! While the songs and style are typically Mavericks, Rick's voice makes the songs his own. Bravo!
