Book Description

My Exile Lifestyle is a memoir made of stories from the life of author, entrepreneur, and full-time traveler, Colin Wright.

From his early years as an antisocial geek, to his high-flying career in Los Angeles, to his life as a wandering vagabond, Colin holds nothing back as he talks about love, business, blogging, and culture through tales that span four continents.

In the easy to digest style of storytelling that has made his other work such a success, Colin discusses life on the road and nothing is too taboo. Every epic, embarrassing, and awkward detail is covered with sometimes brutal honesty.

"Wonderful personal glimpse into an extraordinary life!"
-Derek Sivers, Author of Anything You Want and sivers.org

“Want a completely uncensored tale of what it’s like to live an unconventional location independent lifestyle? Read this book. Whether you're looking to travel, start your own business, or just want to be inspired and entertained, I highly recommend checking out Colin’s new book.”
-Amber Rae, Founder of Revolution.is

4.0 out of 5 stars A brisk walk through a great life July 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Colin has created a whirlwind tour of his life through his own eyes, and it is truly magnetic. This is the first book in a long time that I have read in one sitting, and it's not a short one.

First, let me get the negatives out of the way. The book isn't deep, instead skipping across different topics as they come to him. There is a slight organization by topic, but even that feels almost like an afterthought. There are typos, and the grammar sometimes threw me for a loop, having to read it a few times before I understood what he was saying. In all, it feels like he has been writing a journal for the last two years, and he published a few of the more impactful pages together with some exposition about the greater implications of his thoughts and experiences. It all merges into one massive short attention span theater that guides you through what has happened in his life and what is important to him now.

That said, it reads exceptionally well. I can't imagine the book being better if it were written any other way. The grammar gives it a relaxed conversational feel like he is talking to a good friend, and feels like it is written how he genuinely thinks. This is much better than typical over-sterilized memoirs engineered to make people look good. There is a slight level of pretentiousness throughout, but honestly, it's far less than I would expect from a 26 year old who has had so much success leading others through changing their lives.

Throughout the book, he intersperses advice from different points in his life, and each of them is poignant and direct. From personal branding to travel to relationships to experimenting with your own life to find out what is best for you, it's clear that he speaks from experience. I've lived a similar life for the last year, traveling the world working on projects I'm passionate about, but he's been doing it for twice as long and it shows. So many of his experiences were so familiar to me, and I can see several more on the horizon.

In short, this book is not a standard memoir, which he says up front. It is like sitting down with him and sharing a lot of stories over coffee with him, which is a format more memoirs could use. It's immensely pleasurable, and you will learn some things while being pulled through some great stories. I plan on reading it again soon to take notes instead of just enjoying the stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars needs editing July 29, 2011
By Jens
Format:Kindle Edition
The topic of perpetual travel is interesting, but the writing is sub-par. This is more of a manuscript than a book, it needs to have an editor go though and weed out all the typos, grammatical mistakes and weird tense changes. Content-wise, this book discusses very little about the topic of "moving to a new country every 4 months based on the votes of his readers" as headlined in the description, it's more of a collection of vignettes about his experiences in college, working, traveling and relationships.

3.0 out of 5 stars Such Promise, Such Self Censorhip July 9, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
At times I really enjoyed this this haphazard attempt at memoir / travel journal, a collection of blog posts, notes, brief observations, diary entries and other shallow reminiscing.
There is plenty of promise and no doubt Colin is leading a life that is interesting to many others. However I was constantly left wanting more than his snippets of stories that hook you in and leave you left hanging wanting to know more.
Efforts to proceed in a linear manner are are largely ignored, not for something more stylish but for ease of writing and and to save time editing.
Colin promises "...stories about the downside of living a `rockstar lifestyle' on the road, the difficulties of mini-relationships while traveling..." and its true that he touches on them, but there is little depth to the discussions, you just get sucked into the story and its suddenly case closed, no more to see. His caveat "It's an understatement to say that I'm incredibly uncomfortable sharing some of the details revealed in this book..." should be a bold warning, there is little depth and deep discussion with the reader.
I wanted to give this another star at least, however I was just so frustrated by the inability to tell the whole story.
