5.0 out of 5 stars Corrie's adventures in California, September 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I first borrowed this book from my local library, and it is one of my favorite going-west stories. I was so happy to find it available on Kindle and add it to my permanent collection. Corrie is a funny, likable heroine. Her mother advises her when she's 10, that she'll need some way to make her way in the world, because she "isn't the marrying kind," possibly a reference to Corrie's looks and freckled nose. Corrie is the oldest of 5 children. Their father left to go west, and when news comes of his death in California, they are struggling alone on their farm. Their mother decides to pack up and head west to California, to live with her brother Nick Matthews on his ranch. On the way, however, their mother dies, leaving 15-yr-old Corrie to look after her brothers & sisters with help from the kindly wagonmaster. But when they finally find their uncle, they are in for a very big surprise . . .

I loved the voice of Corrie in this book. It is easy to read, well-told, and descriptive of California during the Gold Rush era, from the viewpoint of a 15-yr-old girl. It also includes various descriptions of rascally characters they encounter on the way. All in all, a well-told Christian historical novel. It is very well-researched, but then, so is all of Michael Phillips & Judith Pella's work. I enjoyed the bits of humor interspersed in the telling. Highly recommended.
