A Bee Gees Christmas Moment,
By
This review is from: My Favorite Carols (Audio CD)
Good stuff, but only if you buy the Euro or Asian versions with Mother of Love. Sounds like vintage Bee Gees and with Mother of Love vintage Robin composition and anthem vocals. Good enough for me to buy on one song alone.
Contemporary background but Robin vocals doing the magic up front.

A Gibb Treat!,

Don't expect silly Santa Claus or Rudolph tunes here. Robin Gibb has taken some of Christmas' most revered Holiday songs and showcased them with his unique, melancholy voice. An added additon is his new song, "Mother Of Love", a tearjerker if ever there was one. Although some of these classics could have used more orchestration, more production, backing vocals and less techno-beat, Robin still manages to provide the Christmas atmosphere of holy reverence. This disc includes an additional "Robin Welcome".

Robin's favorites,

I really enjoyed hearing Robin's voice singing old favorite familiar carols. I would have liked a more organic (not electronic) orchestration.

Perfectly wonderfully Robin. You will certainly enjoy Robin's vocal presentation and arrangement of these traditional Christmas songs. The fans have been asking for this for a long time - and he gave so respectfully well.

Excellent Christmas Album,

"My Favorite Carols" is an excellent CD. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees voice hasn't changed one bit and shines so beautifully in this album. All of the songs are excellent but the songs "Mother of Love" and "Noel (No War)" truly stand out as two of the very best tracks. The only sad thing is like the other Robin Gibb solo albums that have been released in the past couple of years this is not getting any press release at all or advertisement and I think thats a shame because this CD should be known to the world especisally all of the millions of Bee Gees fans who are probably oblivious to this album at all at this time. The DVD is a little bit of Robin talking about Christmas of his childhood and the making of the album. It was fun to watch and also very short. But Thank You very much for this Robin. I've been waiting for a Bee Gees Christmas album for years!!

How about alittle international consitency in song selection?,

No doubt the material on this Christmas CD is better suited for Robin's gifted voice than his previous venture with the horrendous "Magnet" CD. The only thing that stuck to that Magnet was a bunch of bad reviews :-) But the record label chose to release the German version of "Favorite Carols" with 4 or 5 additional tracks including his new single "Mother of Love" that are not in the US version. Of course you can only order that overseas from sites like the German Amazon website. As a US resident, I'm not feeling the love here. All I can say is, I will have to shell out the additional bucks to get the German release and pass on the US, UK, Asian, and Canadian releases since none of these appear to have the extra songs. And that kinda ticks me off.

I bought this CD for my sister for Christmas, and she loves it. We have been long-time fans of the Bee Gees, and this CD from Robin Gibb doesn't disappoint.
There are 10 songs on the CD, starting with "In The Bleak Midwinter" (one of my all-time favorites) and ending with "The First Noel". The arrangements on all songs are very good, but please note that he changed the lyrics on the chorus to "The First Noel", and not to good effect. He sings the original verses, and the chorus lyrics are incongruous with the original verses. This CD is so good otherwise that this choice does not affect my 5-star rating. In addition to "In The Bleak Midwinter", my other favorites include "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Good King Wenceslas" and "Once In Royal David's City". The other songs are ""O Come All Ye Faithful", "Silent Night", "Away In A Manger", "Three Ships", and "Hark The Herald Angels Sing". There is also a bonus DVD with a personal Christmas message from Robin Gibb. If you enjoy the Bee Gees, John Denver, and other folk/easy listening music, this CD should be a welcome addition to your Christmas collection.

I have always loved the Bee Gees and have always wanted the hear them sing Christmas Carols. When I saw Robins' album I just couldn't wait to hear it. Not only did h do a great job, but his revision of Noel into No War is so haunting. I find myself singing it at times when I feel stressed or start to get to get agitated. It calms me down and gives me a new perspective on things. It makes me think of others instead of myself.
Thank you Robin for such a beautiful album. Please do more. Candee

I guess I own the wrong cd, I don't have the version w/ "Mother Of Love" and now must buy it, because if it's anywhere like the rest of this cd, it should be worth the extra purchase.
My favourite is his version of "Noel" and the opening tune "In The Bleak Midwinter", they just blow me away. Classic 60's Bee Gees music is back, with or without Barry or [Maurice...may he R.I.P.] Everything else is great, but those 2 tunes deserve more than 5 stars. |
