This hilarious book tells you all the things you never knew about the lives of famous composers. If you want to read about Beethoven in jail, Strauss being picketed by his second wife, the wild romantic infatuations of Berlioz, and Verdi rleuctantly writing operas when he only wanted to raise horses, this is the book for you. you don't actually have to be interested in composers or classical music to enjoy this book, it is just very very funny. You'll never feel the same about the 'Ring' cycle again when you've read about Wagner's pink satin underwear.

This slim, fun-to-read volume is packed with just the kind of wackiness you'd expect from Borge. But it's all true. His description of the opening of Verdi's "Ernani" in the US brought me to tears laughing. Anyone who's ever been in theater knows that SOME THINGS can go wrong with props and sets, but when EVERYTHING does, that's the kind of thing Borge is good at pointing out. I think he mentioned the disastrous opening of "Carmen" as well. I read this a long time ago, but I recommend it to my friends.

If you are expecting to read an autobiography, forget it. Instead, this is a very well written synopsis on the lives of several composers who dabbled in opera. I wish someone would take up the mantel and write about symphony composers.
My only complaint is that the book was in poor condition- not as advertised. But the contents made up for it.

The musician with the wonderfully twisted mind! This is not a rehash of his great routines, but another way of telling his stories that is also very funny. There is nothing in the world of music that Mr. Borge could not see from a roll-on-the-floor comic perspective.
