5.0 out of 5 stars Go for it., February 2, 2007

This book is a hoot. Particularly if you are a woman who is 54 or if you have been 54 or if you ever plan on being 54, you will find this read funny, charming, and invigorating. Unfortunately, I cannot send it to my mother because Dr. Gwyn and her friends have mouths on them that she wouldn't approve of. Which is precisely the point. These characters are characters: they are outspoken, hilarious, and irreverent. I was happy to pile in for the ride.

Hurray for female characters in their fifties who don't come off like over-the-hill harpies. These women are bright, brave and funny. The book is about Gwyenth Berke a gynecologist and her two friends, Fleur and Kat as they discover life isn't over at menopause, it's just beginning. I really loved it. It made me laugh out loud! But I was also touched by Gwyneth's relationship with her dad and I cheered for the women as they came to Gwyn's rescue in a hysterical scene. I was sorry to see the story end. Let's hope there's a sequel in the works.

Yes I agree with the reviews already written below, even as someone who's not near her midlife crisis yet. This is a good book, well written, and a fast read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, June 15, 2007
This review is from: My Favorite Midlife Crisis (Yet) (Paperback)
"My Favorite Midlife Crisis" is an engrossing read. The characters are engaging and I felt as though I really knew them. I'm in my 40's and I enjoy books with a little more substance that also make me feel good while I'm reading them.

While this book celebrates being in midlife, it also acknowledges the challenges that we might face during this time.

The writing was so finely crafted that I hated to come to the end of the book. Speaking of the end, I won't give it away, but it was very well done.

You can't go wrong buying this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Midlife Crisis Yet...A Very Charming and Fun Read!, August 4, 2011

What a delightful and definitely a different kind of story than I usually read but worth the purchase. It was such a real-life, fun story about middle-aged Gwyneth and her friends, family, and relationships. Accomplished in her life from career to finances to adoring relationships with family and long-time friends, Gwyn has just about everything going for her until she meets a renowned British gynecologist, Simon York, at a medical conference. This begins one sizzling, hot relationship that will have you breathless.

As Gwyn's association with Simon progresses, she begins to question this sporadic relationship and asks herself who this so-good-to-be-true man really is. But as the plot thickens, the relationship begins to unravel; she begins to unstitch his character piece-by-piece. In coming to the climax of the story, we will find out the true Simon. He turns out to be the antagonist in this plot. You have to read further to see what conniving, unruly occurrences transpire with Dr. York's character (no spoilers here). It really is a great turn in the story that will have you totally thrown for a loop. But you will be pleased at the conclusion when Gwyen's friends come to her aid and help bring down the egotistical, renowned Dr. Simon York.

The ending is brilliant, and will have you cheering. When I grow up, I want a midlife crisis as fun as this journey was! Truly a well-written, enjoyable, warm and fun read! The storyline and characters were exceptional! Kudos to the author Toby Devens for her debut novel... such a pleasurable read! Highly recommend!

Great story with "fifty something" women, facing different, difficult challenges.

This book contains good friends, funny dating stories, aging parents, divorce, death of a spouse, love and revenge.

It covers alot of ground, and does it well.

I enjoyed the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover - it's seeminlgy random., April 6, 2011

I loved how this book explored life after 45. So many books focus in on a woman's age span and get stuck in 20-35, acting as though life ends after this. As a 29 year old woman, I sincerely hope this is not the case! For all intents and purposes this was a good book.

As many books begin in a moment of self actualization, this one is no different. I did enjoy the way the main character developed and continued to take emotional risks throughout the story. I can't say that this book inspired me, moved me to tears or lingered the way some great books of fiction can, but I did enjoy it and found myself wondering what would happen next. I even stayed up past my self-imposed bedtime a few nights to keep reading a few more pages.

I could have done without the clichéd "sisters unite" revenge twist, but I would purchase more work from this author. Perhaps a follow up book written from Kats perspective would be a fun and interesting read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, March 30, 2011

After being disappointed by other bargain priced books I didn't have high hopes for this one. Wrong. It was fun and fast and I looked forward to getting back to it each evening. There were a couple of scenes that were far-fetched but they didn't detract from the story. Light 'n fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read!, July 19, 2008

Finally, a book to which I could relate. Rather than tell a pretty story about 30- or even 40-somethings, Toby Devens focuses on women over fifty, their real-life concerns and anxieties, and ultimately, their triumphs. Devens uses just the right combination of humor and tears to bring the characters to life, and in the process, paints a realistic picture of what it's like to be in the "sandwich generation."

I was particularly moved by the relationship between Gwyneth and her father Harald. Her struggle to deal with and finally accept his Alzheimer's condition brought tears to my eyes. It's something so many of us must deal with.

Devens does not soft-peddle the aging issue - and sometimes, it's not pretty. But she gives us hope and reinforces the idea that in the end, it's our female friends who will be there for us, no matter what.

I loved this book and hated to see it end. I hope she does a sequel.
