Book Description

Harlequin Blaze February 1, 2005

"I, Denise Cooke, take thee, Redford DeMoss, to be my lawful husband..."

No, wait...I did that already--three years ago in a Vegas chapel after one too many Long Island Iced Teas. I married a hunky U.S. Marine I'd met only hours before. (The uniform did it.) The wedding night--week--was spectacular. Then Redford went back to the Gulf. And I went back to my real life as a New York City financial planner...and filed for an annulment.

I'm dating Barry the TV producer these days, but I think about Redford...a lot. And now, thanks to an upcoming IRS audit, I'm about to see ex-husband again. So why am I flustered? He's probably married, and I have--um, what's his name. It's not as if Redford plans to take me back...or take me--gulp--to bed. Besides, I'd never make the same mistake twice. Not even my favorite one...

More About the Author

Stephanie Bond was several years into a corporate computer programming career when an instructor in her night school MBA program remarked that she had a flair for writing and encouraged her to submit one of her projects to academic journals. "But," Stephanie says, "all I could think was 'I wonder if I could write a romance novel?'" Bond grew up on a farm in eastern Kentucky where the entertainment choices were few. Luckily, she had a beloved aunt who shared her passion for reading. "When she visited once a year, she brought boxes and boxes of books by Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney and lush historicals--I was in heaven! I think I learned most of what I know about world history from historical romance novels. So suddenly thinking about writing in the genre of the books I loved so much was very exciting." After writing every spare moment for two years, Stephanie sold her first romantic comedy manuscript, IRRESISTIBLE? to Harlequin books. Two years later, she walked away from her corporate career to write commercial fiction full time. To date, she's published over 60 romance and mystery projects with various New York publishers, and is most well-known for her BODY MOVERS humorous mystery series. Stephanie lives in midtown Atlanta and is probably working on a new story at the very moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read!, April 9, 2005
This review is from: My Favorite Mistake (Harlequin Blaze) (Mass Market Paperback)
A tax audit brings Denise Cooke and her ex-husband Redford back together. Three years were not enough to make her forget his logic defying effect, and she fears that seeing him again will once again awaken her best-forgotten wild side. Certainly their brief time together in Los Vegas was proof enough that she was incapable of maintaining her ordinary logic where Redford Demoss is concerned. While their marriage lasted long enough to file taxes together, their subsequent annulment prevented any further contact until now.

Denise has never told current boyfriend about her first husband. While their relationship lacks the vivid spark that characterized her relationship with Redmond, it is stable, comfortable and predictable. After two years of mild courtship, she accepts his proposal just before she must see Redford again. And while the conclusion of this story might seem rather inevitable given the genre, the humor, levity and delight of the journey makes MY FAVORITE MISTAKE a delightful read.

Author Stephanie Bond pens a vividly refreshing romance in MY FAVORITE MISTAKE. Perhaps her own past corporate world lends the fabulously entertaining heroine her convincing charm. While Ms Bond's background is computing and Denise Cooke's is financials, the commonality of the carefully controlled office experience lends the novel a crisp reality while sensual temptation gives Denise an even more convincing edge. From the running of the brides and Denise's ongoing eBay bid to get her dress back, to the sensual temptation of the hunky former marine, Ms Bond's deft, first person narrative departs from Harlequin's usual narrative style. Indeed, MY FAVORITE MISTAKE certainly illustrates the author's gift for weaving original, brilliant romance that readers find impossible to put down. MY FAVORITE MISTAKE comes very highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very abrupt ending - not up to Ms. Bond's usual quality, January 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
From the beginning, I didn't feel that the character development was up to Ms. Bond's usual quality, however, after a few chapters, I was convinced to invest in them. There were 2 main problems that ruined the book for me. First, I work in Manhattan and I it was very clear that the author doesn't know anything about NY and didn't bother having a NYer look over the work. First - driving and parking a monster truck in Manhattan would be nearly impossible and only a fool would try it. Second - no car dealer in Manhattan would dream of selling such trucks. Third - when touring NYC, Redford and Denise would never go from the Statue of Liberty (South, right by Ground Zero), to Central Park (North of Midtown), then back to Ground Zero. Obviously, these inconsistencies wouldn't bother folks unfamiliar with Manhattan, but almost killed the book for me.

The bigger problem, however, was the very abrupt ending. It was just this side of "deus ex machina". Denise seemed to come to her senses and all the resolution was complete within a few pages. Totally inconsistent with the amount of mental hand-wringing Denise had performed in the first 90% of the text.

Overall - I'm still a fan of Stephanie Bond, but this was nowhere near her finest effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not A Mistake to Buy This Book!, March 17, 2005
This review is from: My Favorite Mistake (Harlequin Blaze) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of my favorite storylines - reunited lovers. Stephanie Bond has created a hero to die for. The characters are believable and likeable. The secondary characters were outstanding - especially Jackie - these people were grown ups, mature and facing problems as adults.

There was also a lot of humor in this book and I read it in one day. I plan to check out more Stephanie Bond for sure!
