Editorial Reviews

Freddie King’s My Feeling For The Blues is more than just an appropriate title for this legendary blues album….It is a true description of the prowess, excitement and artistry that this brilliant artist conveyed to millions of his fans and fellow musicians for the very short time we were all blessed to have him on planet earth. The Gilmer, Texas born guitarist and blues master was an ardent student of country blues throughout his early life. After years of smaller label releases, plentiful session work and tireless club gigs, “The Texas Cannonball’s” songs were soon to be covered by some of the biggest rock and blues artists of all time like John Mayall, Eric Clapton and Johnny Winter. Freddie moved back to Texas and would soon be contacted by saxophone legend King Curtis and Atlantic Records to record a new album of material for the new label Cotillion , which would go on to become one of the first albums for this historic label as well, known as Freddie King Is A Blues Master (FRM-90040) The recording sessions for My Feeling For The Blues yielded 11 stellar workouts which have all gone on to become some of his most treasured material. Kicking things off with the soulful blues of the classic Yonder Wall, Freddie not only had a chance to show his fans his guitar acumen, he also displayed his soulful vocal style that was another side of the artists’ winning appeal. This fine album proved that Freddie King could also deliver the goods as even more powerful artistry abounds with the funk of Ray Charles’ What’d I Say, the sweltering lead guitar breaks on The Things I Used To Do, the thrilling approach of the master on I Wonder Why and the instrumental break beat of his solid groover You Don’t Have To Go. As another stellar release in our Freddie King Original Records Master Series, Friday Music is proud to offer the limited edition classic My Feeling For The Blues. This legendary blues release is now enhanced with impeccable mastering from the original Cotillion/Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (Freddie King/Johnny Winter/Muddy Waters). We have also included some rare label memorabilia, original artwork elements, new liner notes including some kind words from his old friend the great Johnny Winter, and of course all of these great tunes to make this one of your favorite blues revisits from the immortal blues titan Freddie King.

Format: Audio CD
The mid-to-late Sixties was a strange and difficult time for many Blues men - most were without contracts, forgotten and under-appreciated. Then the Blues boom happened (particularly in the UK) and many had their careers kick-started all over again.

Freddie King was no exception. His last album had been for Federal in 1964, but with a new lease of life on the mighty Atlantic label, he produced two much revered LPs in rapid succession. The first was "Freddie King Is A Blues Master" released in 1969 on SD 9004 - and then this peach - "My Feeling For The Blues" on Cotillion SD 9016 released in early 1970.

This 1991 Repertoire CD (REP 4170-WZ) is a straightforward transfer of that second 11-track album (36:03 minutes).

Ace saxophonist KING CURTIS produced the record - with all arrangements by Atlantic's newest soul protégé DONNY HATHAWAY (except "Woke Up This Morning" which was Arranged by King Curtis).

The musicians for the sessions were:
Lead Guitar & Vocals - FREDDIE KING
Rhythm Guitar - CORNELL DUPREE
Tenor Saxophones - GEORGE COLEMAN and FRANK WESS
Tenor & Baritone Saxophones - TREVOR LAWRENCE and WILLE BRIDGES
Trumpets - ERNIE ROYAL and MARTIN BANKS
Piano - GEORGE STUBBS
Bass - JERRY JEMMOTT
Drums - KEVIN RICE
"What'd I Say" features Bass Marimba and Sax Solo by KING CURTIS
"You Don't Have To Go" and "The Things I Used To Do" feature Harmonica by HUGH McCRACKEN

The 3-way foldout inlay has a brief but informative history of King's career by BERND MATHEJA that is sided on Page 3 by a selected Discography. Although licensed from East West, it doesn't advise who remastered what - but the sound quality is great nonetheless - clean, muscular and so enjoyable.

This is an amazing Freddie King album. The other review is right when he says that the album deserves five stars just for Freddie's acoustic version of "Things that I Used To Do". This is one of the Freddie King albums that, unfortunatly, is getting harder to find and will probably be impossible to find within the next few years. Do yourself a favor and buy this album before you can't find it. This is an amazing blues album that does show Freddie King's budding talent.

My favorite album by Freddie and one of the all-time best blues albums IMHO. The credits are like a who's who of R and B in that era. Donny Hathaway as arranger, King Curtis as producer, and a rhythm section that included Jerry Jemmott and Cornell Dupree. The groove tempos are not too fast and not too slow; in other words just right. The horn arrangements are sublime and Freddie's performance is top-notch. Guitar players could, obviously, pick up a few things from Freddie, but Cornell Dupree lays down some of the fattest rhythm performances I've ever heard. The first two songs, Yonder's Wall and The Stumble set the tone for the whole recording. Do your self a favor and grab this one!

This is one fine album indeed from the Atlantic Records era of the late great Freddie King. Johnny Winter pays a nod to the man in the liner notes and one can see why...its a jewel of a cd. Stormy Monday, I Don't Know, etc. some primo stuff here!
