Bruce Joel Rubin, Screenwriter; Ghost, Jacob's Ladder, My LifeAnneliese Widman, a well-known New York psychotherapist, has given us an unusual and poetic spiritual autobiography. Her book will be an inspiration to all those who have struggled with the scars of early abuse and its attendant pain and confusion in adult life and relationship. As she movingly documents, it is only by patient reflection on the deeper spiritual meaning in our suffering and by finding a full and honest relationship with ourselves -- both the dark and the light within us -- that we can find peace and wholeness. A fine, courageous and challenging book.. --
Roger J. Woolger, Ph.D., Author, Other Lives, Other Selves and The Goddess WithinDancing for Anneliese Widman, I felt her impatience with mere movement, with any hint of irony or cynicism. 'Show me your male, show me your female,' she entreated, 'show the deepest aspects of your being.' Her dance, like her writing, is full-blooded, direct, and radiantly symbolic, a vision of the fearless self. --
Douglas Dunn, ChoreographerDr. Widman uses prose and original poetry to express the emotionally up-heaving inner search that many of us have experienced. The book's bold honesty stirs our own hidden truths and brings them to the surface to be examined and dealt with. Dr. Widman speaks first hand of the pain and frustrations we have all felt as we travel the road of self-discovery.
It is refreshing to read a book by a professional counselor with the courage to write about her own tumultuous past. How do we make sense of who we are? Will I ever fit all the pieces together? Why can't I be content with what I know now? How does God fit in this picture of me? Dr. Widman's own questions are the same ones we ask ourselves. The reader will discover that this exciting, painful and beautifully written account speaks directly to the heart and encourages it onward. -- Concepts Magazine, Summer 1997
Formerly a Broadway dancer & currently a practicing psychotherapist, Widman shares her innermost secrets, loves, fears, hopes, & joys as she takes readers on a breathtaking journey from her abusive childhood through a series of failed relationships to her eventual spiritual awakening. -- Bookpages, Fall 1997
In a non-coincidental universe, qualities from past existence purposefully occur in our parents and then are "reflected" in each of us. "Reflectivism," if I understand this correctly, synthesizes psychoanalysis and Bioenergetics in a therapeutic process in which each person may face and overcome limitations through taking responsibility for actions once imposed on others and now experienced within his or her own life. Dr. Widman teaches the way this works by telling her own life story -- her traumatizing childhood, her passion for dance, failed relationships, discovering her emotional armoring, exploring past lives, and so on, emerging joyfully as integrated male and female, self and God. An intermingling of poetry and narrative prose unite the feminine and masculine modes in a fascinating journey of self-recovery and integration. -- NAPRA ReView, Holiday 1997
Intensely direct, intimate, unabashedly honest. An exquisitely profound autobiography, brilliantly written in poetic prose and poetry, by a New York psychotherapist and former Broadway dancer. Anneliese relives her painful childhood and series of failed affairs and marriages to realize that she is an ever-evolving spiritual being, growing from lifetime to lifetime. A healing balm for any woman seeking personal truth. It is an honor to meet this artist through her sensitive work. -- So Young Magazine, November-December, 1997
This work, written with the stark honesty necessary for therapeutic growth, stirs hidden truths in the reader's unconscious and, bubbles them to the surface to be dealt with. Widman's vivid images, and intense feelings are a powerful vehicle...stimulating memories useful on the path to wholeness...courageous...a model for other works in this genre. -- Ronald Robbins, Ph.D., Author, Rhythmic Integration: Finding Wholeness on the Cycle of Change

The Journey...to Spiritual Awakening and Wholeness began for Anneliese Widman in Germany. She emigrated with her parents in 1921 to the US. The land of hope, of promises, of opportunities, and dreams fulfilled....it would be that for Anneliese too but only after perseverance, hard work and faith over many years. The tough questions kept coming at her... all revolving around the critical one...who am I?
She discovered early on that she had been born to a tyrannical mother and a sadistic wimp for a father. Events in her early life kept reenforcing this. She escaped while still in grade school through dance but they had left their mark early on. The result for her was many failed relationships. She would learn later, much later the "why" for this too.
But she had her dancing. And dance she did with full energy and perseverance. Her dance became her dance career, an amazing dance career. With much hard work she rose to prominence and danced with Marlon Brando in "A Flag was Born" and E.G. Marshall in "Dear Judas" and shared the marque with Mort Stahl in "The Next President." She also danced with the New York Ballet Co and overseas in "Up In Central Park. She continued her work in the Yiddish Theater and taught and performed with the Israeli national dance troupe.
Yet the questions persisted WHO AM I? She could escape through dance for a time. But the personal life was still in shambles and Anneliese continued her searching for answers. She entered into therapy which led to her discovery of Bioenergetics. This deals with the body as a mirror of the mind. This discovery was the second formative experience in her life. Through Bioenergetics, Anneliese learned that frustration and angst produce musculature armoring and that, in her case, this armoring was preventing her from becoming a fully realized dancer. With the help of Dr. Warner, Anneliese learned to experience the real joy of movement. Bioenergetics motivated Anneliese to challenge conventional dance theory and to revolutionize the dance world.
This discovery also led her to unlocking the other mysteries in her life. Like all others who walk the inner path, she learned to look inward for answers. She realized more fully the role of her parents...the important role they had to play so she could journey to personal and spiritual wholeness.
Now, Anneliese Widman shares with others what she has discovered. Through her psychotherapy practice she helps equips others to pursue their own personal journey to wholeness.
And through her just released book MY FEMALE, MY MALE, MY SELF, AND GOD she tells her story, taking the reader on an emotionally charged, breathtaking journey...her journey to self-discovery and wholeness. She shares her innermost secrets, loves, fears, hopes and joys using both prose and poetry to make the reader an intimate partner in this compelling, spiritual and psychological journey. Her life-long quest...through dance, Bioenergetic therapy and persistent question, WHO AM I ...brings answers to what went wrong and creates new peace and meaning.
In the best tradition of quest literature, Widman shares with the reader what she has learned from her own therapy and Bioenergetics. She does this in a way that will be useful to others who are seeking to heal themselves. It is her journey...but this dramatic and moving spiritual writing becomes a guide for the reader's personal path.
And finally, Anneliese Widman firmly believes that everyone has a unique role to play and that hers is to help explain the mysteries of the female/male energies and to explore the complexities of the human personality.
She has come along way since the girl who emigrated from Germany...she has unlocked the door from "Not I", traveled through the "I" and now understands and encourages others to discover the "I AM."
