Review

"Overall, I felt like I was reading a nice combination of Julie Garwood and Johanna Lindsey and although I have never heard of this author until now,  I am already a fan. Vonda Sinclair did an amazing job writing an entertaining highland romance. It was fluid and wonderfully paced which allowed me as a reader to savour the character's emotions and events written within the pages. I look forward to the next installment in this highly anticipated series." Lori at Escape Between the Pages

"Vonda Sinclair captures the excitement and magic in romance with My Fierce Highlander! Her vivid story telling brought the Scottish Highlands to life with detail and accuracy. The language used was not complicated if you are unaccustomed to Scottish Romances, just enough of that sexy brogue and Gaelic to make you tingle. Sinclair delivers a plot that is enticing and moved fluidly with captivating characters full of dimension that were brought to life on the pages. The romance was balanced nicely with action and suspense. I was caught breathless during the most romantic scenes ever, being drawn in by Alasdair and Gwyneth's sizzling chemistry and fiery passion." "I started around 10pm and ended up reading it straight through til 2am! I kept saying to myself "As soon as I find a stopping point, I'll put it down," but I just kept on reading... This was my first Vonda Sinclair read, and it won't be my last. The Highland Hussy decrees that Ms. Sinclair is a fantastic writer, who brought so much of the reality of fighting and feuding Highlanders to the pages, that it was easy to visualize and sympathize with Gwyneth." Product Description

Gwyneth Carswell, an English lady banished by her father to the harsh Scottish Highlands, wants nothing more than to take her young son away from the violence of two fighting clans--her own distant kin, the MacIrwins, and their enemies, the MacGraths. She risks everything to rescue the fierce MacGrath warrior from the battlefield where he’s left for dead by her clan. She only knows she is inexplicably drawn to him and he wants peace as she does. When her clan learns of her betrayal, they seek vengeance. Dare she trust the enemy more than her own family?

Laird Alasdair MacGrath is driven to end two-hundred years of feuding with the MacIrwins. But by taking in and protecting Lady Gwyneth and her son, he provokes more attacks from his mortal enemy. As the danger and conflict surrounding them escalate, Alasdair and Gwyneth discover an explosive passion neither of them expected. With the arrival of a powerful man from her past, a horrible decision confronts her--give up her son or the man she loves.

"Wow! I LOVE Highlanders and when I read My Fierce Highlander by Vonda Sinclair, I fell in love with Laird Alasdair MacGrath at once, and wanted to be the one rescuing him instead. Adventure, fighting, romance, the Highlands--what more can anyone ask for! Loved it!" Terry Spear, author of Heart of the Highland Wolf

"I loved the description of the Highlands. This compelling story of two wounded people who each heal the other is spellbinding and simply lovely. I WANT MORE!" Cate Parke
***
Scottish Highlands, 1618
A stiff breeze carried the scent of bruised grass and blood on its icy breath.
Death.
Gwyneth Carswell dropped into a crouch and peered through brambles at the tartan-clad bodies, a dozen or more, lying in the dusky gloaming. While gathering herbs earlier, she’d heard the sounds of battle—men shouting, steel clanging, horses screaming.
A chill shook her. The men of the MacIrwin clan, her distant kin, lived and died only for a skirmish. Her sheltered upbringing in England had molded her into the person she was, a lover of peace, but she’d been in the Highlands long enough to expect brutality at every turn. Thank God her son had stayed in the cottage with Mora.
“More senseless death,” she whispered, yearning to run and hide in the cottage, curl up beneath the blankets, and forget she was a healer. Forget all the drained blood and horrifying wounds that would never heal.
But she must not. She must again face death all around her. Dread and nausea rising within her, she covered her nose with a handkerchief. After peering about to make sure she was alone, she crept onto the soggy moor and forced herself to look at the butchered bodies of her cousins…and their enemies. Who had they been fighting?
Pressing her eyes closed to block out the slit throats and other mutilation, she murmured a prayer, both for their departed souls and for strength that she might keep going.
Please, allow me to save the life of at least one.
A haunting groan floated on the breeze. A sign? Her prayer answered? Gwyneth froze, listening. The groan sounded again, straight ahead.
She rushed to the far edge of the clearing.
Daylight dwindled, but she knew she’d never before seen the injured man, a large warrior with long dark hair, obviously from the enemy clan. She could not tear her gaze from his clean-shaven face, smeared and spattered with blood. Never had she seen such a striking man. But something more captivated her, something she could only sense with her woman’s intuition. She yearned for him to open his eyes, but he didn’t.
Blood soaked through his white shirt and fine, pale-blue doublet.
Kneeling on the damp ground, she attempted to press her hand against his chest to feel his heartbeat, but a rolled-up parchment lay in her way within his doublet. She removed it and checked his heart. The thump was slow but strong and steady.
Her eyes locked to his face again. Enticing, yes, but still an enemy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching read, August 7, 2011

This review is from: My Fierce Highlander (Kindle Edition)
My Fierce Highlander by Vonda Sinclair is a touching read, filled with adventure and heart stopping romance.

English Lady Gwyneth Carswell is banished from her home and position by her father to the harsh Scottish Highlands. Her one mistake in judgment led to her becoming pregnant in the year 1618.

Married to a brutal highland man of her father's choosing, then widowed a short time later, Gwyneth will do anything to protect her beloved son Rory, not only from the shame of his illegitimacy, but physically also.

She vows he will not learn the ways of war her clan and the bloodthirsty laird MacIrwin wish to teach him. Rather, she strengthens his mind through education, in hopes that he will one day be able to leave the battle bloodied highlands for a safe, peaceful position as a professor or some other nonviolent profession.

Laird Alasdiar MacGrath leads a neighboring clan, yet unlike The MacIrwin, Alasdiar longs for peace between their clans. He strives to end two hundred years of funding by agreeing to come in person to MacIrwin land, a peace treaty safely tucked away in his clothing.

But Donald MacIrwin laird is not an honorable man, and he ambushes Alasdiar and the men who traveled with him, rendering almost all dead.

Gwyneth, a healer, stumbles across the battlefield, and is sickened by the senseless carnage. She discovers Alasdiar gravely wounded, and struggles to decide what she should do.

She sees from his clothing that he is from an enemy clan, and suspects by the fine quality of his garments that he holds some high position within his clan, perhaps even the laird. She knows if she assists him she risks not only her life, but that of her son and the elderly healer she and Rory lived with.

But something about the handsome enemy stirs her. As she does a hasty examination, she discovers the peace treaty he carried and she knows she cannot let this peace seeking man die.

Adventure blasts off the first page, and keeps the reader hanging on and breathless clear through to the last page.

Ms. Sinclair pens a Scottish Historical guaranteed to stay in the readers' heart and mind well after Gwyneth and Alasdiar's story comes to an end.

I enjoyed the twist within this love story. Rather than Gwyneth wearing her heart on her sleeve pining away for Alasdiar's affection, it is Alasdiar who openly declares his love for her.

This warrior has his heart broken time and time again as Gwyneth rejects his offer of marriage and protection because she is determined to take her son away from the highlands and its inherent violence.

Regardless of the love she feels for Alasdiar, her first responsibility is to her son and his safety. She will scacerfice her own happiness, and that of Alasdiar's, to protect Rory.

The love scenes in this story are few, and are sophisticated, penned for the mature reader.

My Fierce Highlander is well written, with just the right amount of brogue to draw the reader into the Highlands, yet not enough to distract from the story itself. I was impressed with the detail's Ms. Sinclair threaded into this story, clothing, food, housing, attitude, and customs enriched Gwyneth and Alasdiar's journey and truly drew me into their world.

I highly recommend My Fierce Highlander, and look forward to book two in this series, My Wild Highlander.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend!, August 12, 2011

Who doesn't love Highlanders? Hmm? Alasdair is a mighty highland warrior with a past heartache that rounds him out as perfect hero material. Gwyneth is a heroine who has been to hell and back and will do anything to protect her son and ensure his future.

I read this book in one sitting. The chemistry between Alasdair and Gwyneth is sizzling. Rory, the son, is so freaking adorable I wanted to hug him. The emotional conflict for Gwyneth was real and I felt horrible for her. And Alasdair's desperation to keep hold of Gwyneth broke my heart for him.

Ms Sinclair makes the Highlands of Scotland come to life through her writing. It's authentic and puts your right in the moment.

I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read - check it out!, August 1, 2011
This review is from: My Fierce Highlander (Kindle Edition)
Vonda Sinclair writes Scottish historical romance as if she lived it and loved it. She drew me into a world of kilts, castles, peat fires and brawny men with lovely brogues so easily, it made me wonder if there were otherworldly charms attached to this book. The romance between the determined heroine and fiercely appealing hero is both heart-warming and scorch-your-socks hot. If you enjoy Scottish historicals in any way, this one is worth the read.
