From the Author

As your child learns the alphabet, he or she is also learning something called phonemic awareness the ability to hear and separate sounds. My First Bob Books: Alphabet is written to help tune your child's ear to the sounds letters make. This foundation sets the stage for the magical moment when reading begins. The good news is that you don't have to know reading theory to use Bob Books. As you read the stories and talk about the books, your child is learning. So be silly, play with sounds and make it a game: a, a, a, apple! Alligator! Ant! You're having fun while setting the stage for reading. This is the magic of Bob Books.

More About the Author

Lynn Maslen Kertell has been involved with Bob Books right from the beginning, starting with the first edition in the 1970s. Lynn pasted-up and hand-lettered the original Bob Books, created by her parents, Bobby and John Maslen, when she was in high school.

As Lynn's own daughter was beginning to learn to read, returning to the family business was a natural step. Her experience tackling the fun, bonding and sometimes complex task of helping her child learn to read, showed her that Bob Books really work. There are many skills a child needs to become literate. Bob Books' measured approach respects the steps that turn a child into a reader, and entertains them with real stories that kids can relate to.

Lynn brings the Maslen sense of humor, warmth and gentle encouragement to her writing, as she creates the next generation of Bob Books. She continues Bobby's phonics-based approach to teaching reading, and is proud to contribute to the millions of children who can say with pride, "I read the whole book!"®

Lynn lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and daughter.

This collection of books will take your child through the alphabet teaching a letter at a time and the sounds it makes. This is extremely helpful for my 3 and 2 year old who are currently learning the alphabet. I also purchased the Bob Books set 1 and the two seem to compliment each other well.

So many great things about Bob Books, but my favorite is the hint section in the back of each book. We have all of the new reader sets and each one has review of words to look for and stress as the kiddos are reading.

The Bob Books series is an excellent phonics based extra-curricula read for young children who are eager to begin their love for learning. The prices on Amazon are the best so far and free shipping if you order a few of the sets. It's worth it!!!

BOB books are great! I learned to read with BOB books and my now 5 year old started reading when she was 4 because of BOB books! The alphabet books are wonderful because they enforce the sounds of the letters! My daughter loved reading these with us! She always comes to us and asks us if we can read them to her!

I'm in love. Wait is it silly to say that about beginning readers and curriculum for teaching your child to read? Oh forget it, ridiculous or not I love these little books! Ever since I first discovered The Well-Trained Mind I have been planning on Bob Books being part of our curriculum. So I've been waiting for years to get involved. Then what do they do!? They come out with the My First Bob Books Series and I could not be more excited! There are even now some Sight Words sets for Kindergarten and First Grade, maybe one day I'll get my hands on those too. If you remember in mid-March, I shared with you my excitement about the Bob Books Early Readers, a brand new series from the creators of My First Bob Books and Scholastic. They are fabulous, and you can go back and read that review. Scholastic Reader Level 1: BOB Books: Cupcake Surprise!

In the last two and a half months I have been slowly exposing AppleBlossom to the idea of learning to read, more than just reading aloud to her. These books have been great for that. Specifically using the Alphabet set she knows almost every letter of the Alphabet upper and lowercase. Other methods for reinforcement that we've enjoyed have been LeapFrog DVDs, Preschool Printables and fridge magnets, but I'd honestly vouch that in my opinion one of the best resources we've been working with are these little books.

Unlike the other Bob Books Sets which you may know and love, these My First Bob Books are meant to be read aloud to and with your child. She loves every minute of it. When we first got them, she was so excited about the size that it seemed several times a day I was trying to reorganize and get them back into their box.

I love the Bob Books! This one is teaching my granddaughters the alphabet. One does very well with it, the other one is a bit slower and loves to procrastinate.
