Strengthening these key building-block skills will make your child s steps into reading easier and more enjoyable. From the Author

Emergent readers are beginning to expand their understanding of letter-to-sound relation, sight words, and events within a story. By introducing letters gradually, using consistent short vowels, and carefully paced learning, success is possible from the first Bob Book. Bob Books® Sets 3-5 challenge children with longer words, new reading concepts, the introduction of vowels patterns, and the silent "e." Here are a few tips to continue your child's path to reading success! --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

More About the Author

Lynn Maslen Kertell has been involved with Bob Books right from the beginning, starting with the first edition in the 1970s. Lynn pasted-up and hand-lettered the original Bob Books, created by her parents, Bobby and John Maslen, when she was in high school.

As Lynn's own daughter was beginning to learn to read, returning to the family business was a natural step. Her experience tackling the fun, bonding and sometimes complex task of helping her child learn to read, showed her that Bob Books really work. There are many skills a child needs to become literate. Bob Books' measured approach respects the steps that turn a child into a reader, and entertains them with real stories that kids can relate to.

Lynn brings the Maslen sense of humor, warmth and gentle encouragement to her writing, as she creates the next generation of Bob Books. She continues Bobby's phonics-based approach to teaching reading, and is proud to contribute to the millions of children who can say with pride, "I read the whole book!"®

Lynn lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and daughter.

These pre reading skills are super important. Children must know their shapes, sorting, patterning, sequencing, colors etc. BEFORE they begin to read. They can be learned at the same time as they learn letters or before. I teach PreK and many children coming to me don't know these skills. These pre reading books should be introduced at age 2 (often these skills are not). If your child already knows their letters don't buy this set. For children who know letters and sounds get the Bob Books FIRST set. If learning letters get the ABC set.

Bob Books are very good for children learning to read. I used these with my 2 children and my students.

I got these books for my 3-year-old as an introduction to Bob books. His older sister reads the 'real' Bob books, and I thought that he would like to be a 'big kid' with his own Bob books. The good news is that he does like them. We have read each one several times, and he knows the stories and the developmental lessons that he was supposed to cull from the stories.

My disappointment with the books stems from my lack of understanding of their content. I thought that they were going to introduce very early phonetic concepts, or something similar. Instead, they do not teach anything about reading, per se. Instead, they teach pre-reading skills -- shape identification (circle, triangle, and square), sequencing (what came first, second, and third), and patterns (circle, square, circle, etc.). These are all very important skills, and they are undoubtedly necessary skills for a reader to possess. That being said, it is a stretch to describe these books as pre-readers. These books would probably be better suited to a 2-year-old or a young 3-year-old.

My 5yr old is reading the BOB book sets. He loves them and he is reading very well. My 3yr old was not really interested in watching his brother read. I ordered the Pre-Reading set for my younger son and now he is very excited. He likes having his own books and he is learning shapes, patterns, and sequences while learning to follow a story. He looks forward to reading 'his' books. The characters are younger siblings to the characters in the original BOB book sets. I think this is a good leading in to the older set.

I love these books! My daughter is 3.5 and these are perfect to read aloud with her. We spend time together, and it helps her recoginze shapes and patterns, all pre-literacy skills. She enjoys the stories as well. They are short and it's easy to read 3 or 4 at a time. I'm very glad we got these for her!! I'll definitely be getting the next set in the series.

These books were smaller than what I thought they were. I thought they were your standard size reading books, but they were much smaller. My children still love these books though.

I highly recommend the Bob Books. I have used these books to teach my 4 year old to read. He now reads at a kindergarten level and loves to read on his own. he now reads signs and menus and is genuinely excited to read. We read one book for a week straight, then when he started to recognize all the words and could read it we would have him read that book and then start the next. We have used the Bob alphabet, pre-readers, beginning readers and now the kindergarten and they are great. Compact too, so I can carry them in my purse to keep him busy in the car, waiting at the doctor or at a restaurant.

I'm using these with my two year old to teach him about sorting and categorizing items. I believe the books are helping him to understand that concept. The pictures have opened up room for discussion, which is a plus for young learners. I'm pleased that he's pleased. We typically do one of these books per day. Once we finished the set, I have been allowing my tot to choose a book from the category we're working on for the day. After he masters the subject, I don't see these as being useful. They aren't as satisfying for him as some of the other books we read for fun-- so I'd say he can tell they're "work" .. but he tolerates it. So success!
