More About the Author
As Lynn's own daughter was beginning to learn to read, returning to the family business was a natural step. Her experience tackling the fun, bonding and sometimes complex task of helping her child learn to read, showed her that Bob Books really work. There are many skills a child needs to become literate. Bob Books' measured approach respects the steps that turn a child into a reader, and entertains them with real stories that kids can relate to.
Lynn brings the Maslen sense of humor, warmth and gentle encouragement to her writing, as she creates the next generation of Bob Books. She continues Bobby's phonics-based approach to teaching reading, and is proud to contribute to the millions of children who can say with pride, "I read the whole book!"®
Lynn lives in Seattle, Washington with her husband and daughter.

Bob Books are very good for children learning to read. I used these with my 2 children and my students.
My disappointment with the books stems from my lack of understanding of their content. I thought that they were going to introduce very early phonetic concepts, or something similar. Instead, they do not teach anything about reading, per se. Instead, they teach pre-reading skills -- shape identification (circle, triangle, and square), sequencing (what came first, second, and third), and patterns (circle, square, circle, etc.). These are all very important skills, and they are undoubtedly necessary skills for a reader to possess. That being said, it is a stretch to describe these books as pre-readers. These books would probably be better suited to a 2-year-old or a young 3-year-old.
My one reservation is that these books are paper, just like the other Bob books. That's great news for the cost, but I still might prefer paying more for the My First Bob Books to be sturdier. As much as I'd love to let my son look at these on his own, I'll definitely be hiding them unless we're reading together so they don't get accidentally torn.
