Flash cards reinvented,
By
This review is from: My First Brain Quest: 400 Questions to Build Your Toddler's Word Skill, Third Edition (Brain Quest) (Cards)
The premise of the game is, it asks questions regarding the pictures on the cards and the child tries to answer them according to the illustrations. (The answers are provided as a cheat guide for parents.) One of the great things about it is that it encourages parent/child interaction. All of the cards are printed front and back and typically a card has 3 scenes in it for the kid to name the scene, the action the character Max the Monkey is doing, and objects in the scene. So things like they'll show Max the Monkey putting socks on and it asks, "what is Max doing?" You can also have the child name the colors.
I do agree with another reviewer in that the rivet that binds it is too tight. It'd easily get torn or destroyed by your average 2 year old trying to figure it out. I would love to see a thicker, board book type version of this so it's sturdier for toddlers. I would pay extra for that to have it last longer. I wouldn't wait till 2 yrs old to get this for a child though. I only learned about it when my child was 2.5 yrs old and most of it is already too easy for her. I would think a 1.5 yr old would be a good age to start with this one. I do absolutely LOVE the fact that it is bound together and there's no more 52 card pick up with flash cards! I cannot even begin to express how thrilled I am about that alone! It's a perfect portable size to keep in the car, or bag to take anywhere. I wish I discovered this a long time ago, it would've been perfect for those lengthy waits in the doctor's waiting rooms. I also really love that it's curriculum based so it actually pertains to what my child learns in preschool so she can relate to it.

My 2-year old son is really into pointing out the names of things in books and in real life, so I figured this product would be a lot of fun for him to reinforce the vocabulary and concepts he is picking up every day. The drawings are decent, but not all that realistic in some areas - photographs of real objects are much more interesting to him right now. Overall, this product as fun for my son as I expected it to be - and I am not a mom who is into the flashcard concept, so I am certainly not going to try to make him go through these if he isn't having a good time with it. We'll be sticking with books and real life experiences to reinforce this type of learning.

Great as Speech Therapy Supplement,

This review is from: My First Brain Quest: 400 Questions to Build Your Toddler's Word Skill, Third Edition (Brain Quest) (Cards)
My almost 3 year old son loves these cards and asks daily to "do Max cards". He has played with them without getting bored for almost a year now.
He is in weekly speech therapy for some delays due to unilateral hearing loss and these cards are a great supplement to the play sessions with his therapist. They prompt him to use question words, verbs, and understanding subjects like seasons, household tasks, and noun categories. His therapist has been really impressed with how he focuses on the details of the cards and concentrates on the question being asked. He turns three at the end of the month and I am in the process of ordering the 3's cards, and can't wait for them to arrive. The only thing confusing (to me, not my son yet) is that Max, his sister and his parents are all monkeys but the baby is a human baby. Not a big deal (we're a multi-cultural family anyway)but I thought it was interesting. Definitely get these cards without hesitation. They are well worth the money.

Huge Fan of Brainquest,

I share the opinions of most of the favorable reviewers of this product. These BrainQuest decks have really increased my two-year old's vocabulary. I am really impressed with this product. My daughter also loves Max the Monkey. It is made of foam, but it seems to be sturdy enough for her. BrainQuest decks, along with the Leapfrog Learning DVD series have really helped my daughter increase her language and math skills. I would recommend these to anyone who would like to help their child have fun learning.

Late talker loves these cards,

I bought these for my son, he is 30 months old and a late talker. They were great for helping build his vocabulary. It gave me great ideas of topics to talk to him about and he loved the little monkey. I say "Let's play with Max" and he runs and gets his cards. We substitute storytime before bed with the cards on some nights and it works out great. I will definitly continue to buy these cards as he gets older.

I bought this for my just two-year-old son and it has gone over well. He enjoys looking at the pictures and trying to name the various items. His language/reading skills are fairly advanced so a lot of the picture/color identification things he already knows, but some of the questions on the cards are still a bit advanced for him so there is room for growth. I love the portablity of this activity - very easy to throw in a bag for airplane travel or somewhere waits are anticipated. The box contains three decks of double sided activity cards each held together by a plastic brad, as well as a foam monkey pointer. Having the cards fastened together is a great asset to the on-the-go feasibility of this activity, but they are bound quite tightly and can be hard to slide apart. In my opinion it also necessitates close parental supervision to avoid damaging the deck because my son frequently tries to turn the cards like a book rather then sliding them and has bent several cards. I also have to make sure the monkey doesn't get chewed.
Despite the drawbacks, this is a great learning tool packaged in such a way that kids will just think it is fun and happily learn as they play.

Max the Monkey Brainquest,
This review is from: My First Brain Quest: 400 Questions to Build Your Toddler's Word Skill, Third Edition (Brain Quest) (Cards)
I have just finally stumbled upon these cards & tried them out w/ my 'just turned 3' y/o daughter. She loooved them.. and answered 99% of the questions easily. (The other 1% were for answers that the picture was vague for or the correct answer was an 'older' term used vs. a 'modern' term.) I have since bought the Molly the Mouse ones & Amanda the Panda aged ones for her. My daughter is now hooked on Brainquest! I highly recommend them!
