Book Description

You know what they say:  You always remember your first . . .   Everyone has a story about that first car.  Whether it was a high school graduation present or a junker rescued from the wrecking yard, it was freedom on four wheels, something that  would always hold a special place in your heart.  My First Car captures those wonderful moments of automotive initiation as they were lived by such luminaries as Jay Leno, Mario Andretti, Patrick Dempsey, Danica Patrick, and many more--regular kids at the time, wild to have their first wheels--with photographs of the neophyte drivers with their first cars--back in the day when stardom was a turn behind the wheel.

No matter what activity you're into, from cooking (Guy Fieri) to golf (Arnold Palmer) to rocketry (John Glenn) to art (Andy Warhol), you'll recognize many/most of the people whose stories are told here. They all attained a measure of fame and fortune and they're all car people in one way or another. Oddly, there are no motorcycle stories here -- must be an American thing!

Even if Matt Stone weren't the author of this book, he probably would have been in it anyway. Sixteen and strapped to a 1971 Olds 4-4-2--his family's insurance man must have loved him! With his long and varied professional and private automotive interests, Stone brings just the right sensibilities to the book. No hyperbole, no pompousness, just good stories well told. The stories here are not about mere transportation but life, dreams, first love, venturing into the world literally and figuratively. "Coming of Age" in other words. American readers may simply not appreciate how uniquely American these stories are in terms of cultural undercurrents. From the age at which people get licenses here to the--damnable--ease with which they get them, "only in America" is what many readers in other parts of the world will think.

Nice photos, excellent typography, pleasing design with a bit of a scrapbook flavor, even an Index that fits the bill.

It has been said "You never forget your first car." I know that the saying is true for me. I still remember my Canyon Coral with India Ivory top 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop. That's why I wanted to read My First Car.

Motor Trend executive editor and motoring author Matt Stone compiled 60 stories of these "firsts" from titans of the auto industry and other celebrities. The interviewees share what drew them to, how they enjoyed, and other remembrances of their first car.

The first thing I wanted to checkout was how many claimed 1957 Chevrolets Bel Air "firsts" like me. I'm in good company with motorsports legend Mario Andretti and well-known auto care product manufacturer Barry Meguiar.

I enjoyed how Stone presents each of these stories. First he offers a short background on the individual. Then he weaves the tale of acquisition, use, misuse, and separation from the revered vehicle. There are many stories of how these vehicles helped to build a life-time bond with someone close.

Some folks still have their "first." Others have built tribute "firsts" to relive some of their special times. Whatever the case, most everyone had fond memories of their "first."

The recollections from folks like Jay Leno, Carroll Shelby, Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick, George Barris, Ed Welburn, and Ken Gross keep your curiosity up.

Stone's motor journalist experience yields a thorough look at the topic. His love of automobiles adds interest and draws you into the story.

This book is filled with great stories about great old cars, and I could relate to many of them. It too me back to the streets of Toledo, Ohio and my own first car, a worn out old 1961 Chevy that I paid $75 for and loved for the freedom it gave a teenage boy. I could relate to the stories of rusted out floorboards, of washing its long-faded paint after every ride, and 25 cent a gallon gasoline. Oh, how I wish I could go back and relive those days! And how I wish I had some of those old cars back again, and what they'd be worth in today's market!

My only problem with My First Car are the number of typos throughout the book. In story after story, the wrong word is used, or a word is missing. An example is Peter Brock's bio on page 78, where it says "he remains involved in many author motorsport and automotive design enterprises." Obviously the word should be other, not author. How did a proofreader or editor not pick up on this and the many other errors like it? It made for a distracting read for me, but others might never notice.

Otherwise, a very good book with lots of neat old photos of vintage cars.

Throughout this book you will find yourself remebering the first time you slid behind the wheel of your family's car. It is great to hear stories from celebrities of all kinds, about the first car they drove and what it meant for them.

This is one of those books that is always hard to put down once you pick it up. Some of the people in the book may not all be mainstream, but there are plenty to peak any car enthusiasts interest.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I truly enjoyed this book. I love cars, and I decided that I should read this book, which found its way into my collection. Simply put, this book is snippets -- it's a very fast read. The author has interviewed many celebrities, from all walks of celebrity, regarding their first car, and the memories and feelings retained from that first vehicle. It's quite fun to read about and to see what people used to be driving around in past years. Very entertaining!
