It's very true this only teaches the blanket stitch, but this is a great stitch to learn first, as there's less finger pricking and a chance to develop some control. My children were really excited to make stuffed animals for their younger siblings. Both of them came to me separately and said, "I'm so proud I did this." Now they have the confidence to go on to the "My First Embroidery Book," which will help them learn other hand stitching, in preparation for quilt work later.
Didn't initially expect much, but this has been one of the best teaching aids I've purchased.
I have the whole series, as well as the teacher's guide. These lessons are perfect for using for your own child alone or for using in a classroom setting. This is an excellent curriculum that is certainly suitable for using in schools, in summmer camp and afterschool programs. I do advise purchasing the Teacher's Guide. This manual gives full detailed instructions on how to set up a business at home or travelling teaching children to sew. Ms. Winky Cherry provides copy-ready forms for use with your business! She covers every area immagineable regarding teaching children and running your own business doing so. She even gives you detailed instructions on how to prepare a presentation to pitch your business.
Each and every book in the series is very age appropriate. The hand sewing books are perfect for age 5 and up, and the machine sewing lessens are fantastic for ages 7 and up. You can use the books word for word or you can modify the content to fit your particular age group. I can't say enough about the Winky Cherry curriculum ~ it is really quite thorough and the kids love it.
It is not something a five year old can do all by his or her self. They do need help from an adult. For us it was a great place to start.
Yes, the 2005 edition needed some editing (due to a few typing errors), but my daughter's joy made me over look all that.
