This review is from: My Friends At The Zoo (Hardcover)
"My Friends at the Zoo" is a genuine delight. The first thing that strikes you are the colorful, whimsical drawings. And the concept is original and refreshing.
A little girl spends a day at the zoo, but there's a twist--something you don't notice at first, but which begins to dawn on you as you proceed through the story. As you turn each page, the left page shows what is really happening, and the right page is the girl's fantasy. So where the left side shows her approaching the beautifully plumed peacock, on the right, she's putting the bird on her head like a feathered hat. The left side shows her looking at the otters; on the right, she has joined them, and is floating among them on an inner tube. In her imagination she dances with the zebra and flies with the ostrich--complete with aviator goggles and scarf! A simple scene of a pair of elephants becomes a joyous romp, with the elephants tying their trunks together to use as a jump rope for their new friend. Even the book itself begins with her approaching a zoo full of animals in realistic positions and ends with her leaving a zoo where the animals are all standing around waving goodbye to her.
The pleasant, simple rhymes serve as the perfect backdrop to the illustrations. A great book to read to your children, and an excellent starter book for those just learning to read. Highly recommended!
