Was looking for five-year journals, and came across this one. Initially i was impressed with the binding, the sturdiness of the book. However, in my opinion this is not a proper five-year journal.

Per season there are about 50 pages reserved for notes. Each page consist of space to note things like 'temperature', 'weather briefs', 'special pleasures', 'lessons learned'. However, each item only has limited room, especially when you would write notes in following years.

The introduction in the book briefly hints at a 'five-year, or even more'. Yes, if you write neatly, in small print, and probably come up with a way of marking your notes with dates.

Photos are nice, couple of full page color photos per season. It does have room for garden sketches as well.

Overall, kind of dissapointing.

Instead, look for the 'one line a day -- a five-year memory book'. The size is much smaller, but in this book each page has room for about 6 lines per day, and each page contains room for 5 days (one for each of the days in the five years)

I agree with the other reviewers. This should not be touted as a 5 year journal as it implies enough space to record daily musings for 5 years. That is simply not the case. However, for someone like me who is not a gardener in the traditional sense but aspires to be one if I ever have the time, this actually is a perfect journal for me because it doesn't require an enormous amount of time and commitment to keep up with. The journal is divided into the seasons with about 5 pages per season per year to fill in. At least I assume that is the intent, since every five pages there is a picture. So I'm actually getting use out of this and if you are like me and just want a nice book to jot down seeds you had particular luck with or a place to write about your gardening experiences so you maybe slow down appreciate it more, then this is a nice journal. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the misleading title.

This book has a lot of things going for it; it is lovely, sturdy, informative. It has terrific headings for each page (weather briefs, temperature, lessons learned, triumphs, are fine examples). It has a built-in page marker (yay!). But it is in no way a five-year journal, and that was the most important feature for me for a garden journal. I am extremely disappointed and would not have bought it had I known it is really a less-than-a-year journal (if you garden every or nearly every day).
I was so excited about getting it that I started writing in it before I had counted the pages dedicated to each season (somewhere around 40) and therefore cannot return it.

A friend of mine recently bought his first home and has been planning some gardening ideas. This was just the thing he needed! The journal entries are guided, letting you write down everything from the temperature to the critters you observed that day. There are pages for yard planning, and helpful tips with beautiful photos. An envelope in the back is great for storing seeds you pick up but can't plant yet. It isn't a great book for a serious gardener or one with a very large, detailed yard, but it's perfect for the average gardener.

Okay, so firstly you'll notice from other reviews that this is not a five-year journal.

There are four sections to this journal - Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. There are only 34 pages for each season which means the only way this would be a five-year journal would be if you only went into your garden 6.8 days a season, a year. Well I go into my garden practically every day so there is no way I could use this as a five-year journal. I'm using it as a one-year journal which I think is more realistic to the average gardener. That then makes 34 pages a season which if you go into your garden every other day and only record the important moments this could work as a one-year.

There are about two dozen or so nice but unnecessary pictures included throughout the journal. I wish they would have left these out and instead gave me more pages to record my daily entries.

I do really love this journal, though. It has a space for the date, weather temp for am and pm, a space to record color in the garden, visitors in the garden, don't forget, lessons learned, triumphs and lastly notes. It has everything I could hope or wish for in a journal excepting more entry pages.

I actually returned the journal. I have used the 10 year gardening journal for the past 15 years and really liked the lay out of that book, although the size was too big.
The 5 year journal size was great, but lost some of the sections I particularly liked of the 10 yr. I am planning on printing my own journal pages from the web and creating my own.
If you have never used a gardening journal before this would probably work well.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who gardens. The general makeup of the book is beautiful with color pictures and fine paper and a ribbon to mark the pages. But the nice thing about this book is it encourages you to record your progress as a gardener. There is a page for each day.
