Great, but be warned...!,

This remastered album is the same as the dlx version except all tracks are on 1 disc, which is handy. However, the disc has only 1 layer and it's sacd. So you can't play it in non-sacd players (car stereo, discman, etc.) Remastering job is great though. Deep, rich sound!

If you like the Who and have a CD player capable of playing NON-HYBRID SACDs, then this one is a no-brainer. You get ALL of the material from the 2 CD special edition release, but it is in the higher fidelity of SACD and is all on one disc. I have not compared the standard Red Book release to this one. What I can tell you is that this release beats the pants off of any incarnation of this recording from the past. Hearing these tunes in REAL STEREO for the first time is a true revelation. No longer does the music feel constrained by the mono recording. It is more like the players are performing on a stage in front of you as opposed to mono's non-dimensionality. The recording is wonderfully clean and complete with crystal clear feedback. Moon's cymbals are transparent...his drumwork really stands out on this release. In fact, all the instruments are much better defined. Shel Talmy did a superb remastering job...he really cares about these recordings regardless of his professional problems with the Who. YOU HAVE TO PICK UP THIS ONE!!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Why should Amazon include 118 rewiews about the CD version on the Classic Records Vinyl edition page?
As a vinyl enthusiast I always get bored when I try to look for rewiews about some specific VINYL reissue, and find thousands of rewiews related to other formats (5.1 remixes, SACD, mono or stereo CDs...) all mixed together. Is there any reason for this? By the way, ALL Who Classic Records reissues on vinyl are splendid, impecable original mixes, sometimes very different from the remixes done in mid 90's and currently found on CDs. Highly recommended.

The final word in mono vinyl,

After selling some old found vinyl and making a suprisingly large profit, I decided to plonk down the considerable dosh for this meticulously assembled reissue. Note that among the records sold earlier was an 80s reissue of the 70s two-fer "My Generation" and "Magic Bus", both of which suffered from "electronic stereo" mixes of some songs, and slap-dash haphazard true stereo mixes of others. Well, I got my money's worth and more.
This gorgeous version of one of the 60s greatest and most underrated documents sounds as if you're in the studio watching it all go down on three-track tape. The heavy duty 200 gram vinyl has been adorned with a perfect mock-up of the 60s UK Brunswick label and jacketed in extremely sturdy flipback cardboard with the usual track listing sticker. Had these been the only improvements, it would still be worth the asking price. But the sound... If you're reading this review, I'd surmise that you're well acquainted with the content within, but I guarantee you've never heard it like this. It was like hearing the album again for the first time. Why anyone bothered to butcher this classic with a stereo mix, electronic or otherwise, is beyond me. Aside from Pink Floyd's "The Piper At The Gates At Dawn" or the Beatles "White Album", I don't think I've ever heard music so vividly portrayed in a single track mix - and my stereo system is a little bookshelf model I bought in the 80s. I can barely fathom what this would sound like on an audiophile rig. Whether it was Shel Talmy, Glyn Johns, Gus Dudgeon or some kind of combination that assembled the mono master tape, they really got it right the first time. This was music designed to come at you like a train speeding down a track, and is the closest we'll ever get to experiencing The Who's full-on assault in the heady days of the Railway Arms or the Marquee. The transfer to vinyl using the Quiex system also seems to have taken most surface noise out of the picture. This reissue has turned an extraordinarily powerful debut into a stunner of the highest order, and if, like me, this is the fourth or fifth issue of this album you're buying, believe me, this one lives up to the hype. |
