Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Riding on the popularity of the song/video "Tell Me When To Go," E-40's latest album also doubles as an introduction of the Bay Area's burgeoning "Hyphy" movement to a national audience. His constantly evolving slangcabulary and taffy-like vocal style are acquired tastes--especially outside the Yay--but this new album makes smart choices and is one of 40's most crossover-friendly albums to date. His signature "mob sound" has been stripped down to a minimalist bed of thick bass kicks and catchy hand claps by everyone from Rick Rock ("Yay Area") to Droop-E ("Sick Wit It II"), even Lil' Jon ("Tell Me When To Go"). The album can feel a little repetitive at times, but it's also a sound that plays well in clubs, cars, and earbuds. 40 also opens his door to a host of guests, including local talent like Keak Da Sneak ("Muscle Cars") and The Federation ("Go Hard or Go Home"), but he wisely collaborates with others like NY's Juelz Santana and Houston's UGK ("White Gurl") as well as R&B crooner T-Pain ("U And Dat"). Will this album have the rest of the nation ghostriding the whip? Give it three months and we'll see. --Oliver Wang

Sell Out, Weak, Sorry, should never be said when talking about this album, dope as can be, sad is the fact that most these CATS dont get this album, one person wrote "REMEMBER when u couldnt understand E-40" i was like WOW this fool wasnt even listenin 2 him just St8 Stupid, E40 has made a statement this album is quickly beeing played as much as the chronic 2001, E-40 only did one thing, and thats smarten up, he opened the market up, IF U AINT FEELING OR LIVING THE LIFESTYLE then u arent gonna like it or buy it and knock it, Tell Me When To Go is knokin, Muscle Cars, Gouda, are Str8 2 the point, White Gurl if u didnt know its about keys, yay, snow paint, classic, a way better version of [A Baltimore Love Thing]U And Dat, is As close of a remix 2 in love with a stripper except better, Im Da Man is a STR8 Classic Mike Jones Kills it. Yee is classic, E-40 & Too $hort Droped It Heavy, Gimmie Head is Hella Toked and Tweeked, love that track, Happy To Be Here is another Good Song even though theyre all good. 4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, March 17, 2006
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
I always liked E-40 he is a good rapper from the bay and represents it very well. This release is good not his best but good enough to bump in your car. As usual the beats are great and hit hard if you have a great system and the subject matter is same as usual and they are trying to get the word around about the new Hyphie movement and I like it. Recommend this to rap fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Hard Or Go Home, March 27, 2006
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
40 Water is back with his 10th studio album, and this time he cooperates with mighty crunk-king, Lil' Jon, which have produced half of the songs. We got a solid dose with psychedelics synths and hand claps, and sometimes almost too much of the good. With that being said there is still enough good songs here to please 40 fans, and it's hard to hate on a record with funny song titles as "Gouda" and "Yee".

Besides of Lil Jon, Rick Rock also produced much here, for example the great opening track, "Yay Area". The album starts very good, with tracks as "Tell Me When To Go" and "Go Hard Or Go Home". Another favorite is the funny "Do Ya Head Like This", where E-40 shines with his half-way offbeat and funky flow. After the first 8-9 songs, things start to get
monotonous, and some tracks almost become annoying. There's nothing directly bad here, but when you squeeze 17 songs and 3 skits on one album, we could need more variation. Fair enough that Lil Jon is on his usual synth-package, but the other producers follow the same direction. That's what brings the album down, and I miss some laid back, comfortable cuts. The closest we get is the last track "Happy To Be Here" plus the exceptional nasty "Gimme Head". A couple of other bangers that needs to be mentioned are: "Yee" and "She Say She Loves Me", both produced by Lil Jon. As we go on the guest list is both long and nice, with names like: Juelz Santana, Mike Jones, Too $hort, Bosko and UGK.

My Ghetto Report Card, is another solid record by the Vallejo-rapper, and he continues with his own thang, even with Lil Jon on his team. That he deserves props for, and as 40 says him self, you either "go hard" or "go home"
