3.0 out of 5 stars C- on his report card
E-40 solidified his name as one of West Coast's finest with In A Major Way. His great follow-up album The Hall Of Game showed you that he was here to stay. He had some good album as afterwards and some mediocre efforts but this album right here.... For starters E-40 is trying to go the crunk route but the only problem is that it doesnt fit him at all! Tell Me When To Go...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, March 17, 2006
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
I always liked E-40 he is a good rapper from the bay and represents it very well. This release is good not his best but good enough to bump in your car. As usual the beats are great and hit hard if you have a great system and the subject matter is same as usual and they are trying to get the word around about the new Hyphie movement and I like it. Recommend this to rap fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Hard Or Go Home, March 27, 2006
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
40 Water is back with his 10th studio album, and this time he cooperates with mighty crunk-king, Lil' Jon, which have produced half of the songs. We got a solid dose with psychedelics synths and hand claps, and sometimes almost too much of the good. With that being said there is still enough good songs here to please 40 fans, and it's hard to hate on a record with funny song titles as "Gouda" and "Yee".

Besides of Lil Jon, Rick Rock also produced much here, for example the great opening track, "Yay Area". The album starts very good, with tracks as "Tell Me When To Go" and "Go Hard Or Go Home". Another favorite is the funny "Do Ya Head Like This", where E-40 shines with his half-way offbeat and funky flow. After the first 8-9 songs, things start to get
monotonous, and some tracks almost become annoying. There's nothing directly bad here, but when you squeeze 17 songs and 3 skits on one album, we could need more variation. Fair enough that Lil Jon is on his usual synth-package, but the other producers follow the same direction. That's what brings the album down, and I miss some laid back, comfortable cuts. The closest we get is the last track "Happy To Be Here" plus the exceptional nasty "Gimme Head". A couple of other bangers that needs to be mentioned are: "Yee" and "She Say She Loves Me", both produced by Lil Jon. As we go on the guest list is both long and nice, with names like: Juelz Santana, Mike Jones, Too $hort, Bosko and UGK.

My Ghetto Report Card, is another solid record by the Vallejo-rapper, and he continues with his own thang, even with Lil Jon on his team. That he deserves props for, and as 40 says him self, you either "go hard" or "go home"

5.0 out of 5 stars PRETTY SOLID, August 6, 2009
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
THIS ALBUM WAS SICK...I'M FROM THE BAY AND THERE WAS ATLEAST 3 SONGS ON HERE THAT THE RADIO PLAYED OUT, AND THEY WEREN'T EVEN THE BEST SONGS ON HERE. THAT SAYS ALOT....THIS ALBUM WAS FULL OF STREET BANGERS, HYPHY MUSIC, CLUB JUMPERS, A COUPLE OF SOULFUL NUMBERS AND THE REST WAS PRETTY MUCH COMMERCIAL CRAP. BUT THIS IS BY FAR E-40'S BEST WORK TO DATE. HE FOUND THE LINK BETWEEN UNDERGROUNGD AND MAINSTREAM..HE MANAGED TO KEEP HIS HARDCORE FANS QUENCHED AND GAVE SOMETHING NEW FOR THE RADIO TO PLAY AS WELL

Bay Area's E-40 has been in the music scene since the early 90's striking a deal with Jive Records, and putting his family members, The Click, on with him. Having numerous albums under his belt, mainly In a Major Way, you know that he can squeeze out good albums whenever he puts his mind to the process. In 2006, he gives us his latest album My Ghetto Report Card, signing with Lil' Jon's BME Records (Warner Brothers/WEA). Now when I first heard that E-40 was making this album here in Atlanta, I immediately wrote this album off and didn't give it a chance, because I thought to myself "Oh no, here comes another Bay Area artist trying to get with the ATL (like a certain bald headed rapper who moved here back in '95 and has bordered awful $hortly after). So about two and a half years later, I finally decide to order this album, giving it a full listen. How does it stack up?

Call Earl Stephens an innovator on the hyphy movement in the Bay Area. The album has bass pumping production, and 40 actually spits good rhymes, proving that he's "A vet, not an amateur" said on the album's opening track "Yay Area". That track is kinda cool, because in the background is a repeated sample from Digable Planets' Ish saying "We be to rap, what key be to lock". The album's lead single "Tell Me When To Go" is another surprisingly good single with Keak da Sneak, as 40 says the popular phrase "Ghost ride the whip!". "Go Hard or Go Home" featuring Federation is one of the best tracks, because 40 turns a simple hook to a great song. "Gouda" featuring B-Legit is another great track. Later on is the upbeat "They Might Be Taping", where 40's fast delivery flow shows here. Other tracks worth mentioning enough to standout were the second single "U and Dat" featuring Chris Brown, and Kandi Girl, as well as the final track "Happy To Be Here". Many guests don't disappoint, such as Juelz Santana, and UGK (RIP Pimp C) on "White Gurl", and "She Said She Love Me" with UGK and 8-Ball.

Songs that aren't that good are "Do Ya Head Like This" with a weak uncreative hook. Mike Jones' guest appearance doesn't so well on "I'm Da Ma".

Overall, 40's latest album is excellent. The hyphy production and the great lyrics really proves that 40 ain't nothing new to the game. If you like that kind of style from the Bay Area, this is a must have for you. This is one I can enjoy many times, and has kept in rotation since I purchased it, this is highly recommended for any fan. Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars E-40 IS COOL, July 15, 2007

I think his name is E-40 because he likes to eat and drink 40 ounce bottles of beer. My son really likes this album. He loves E-40 and buys all of his albums. E-40 is funny, creative, and has a language that is all his own. He makes up funny words and phrases. This is great if you like rap music. This rapper is so original and stands out as an individual and I think that makes him so cool. He does it his way and that is the best way for sure.

Tell Me When To Go wasnt a bad single but Keak Da Sneak's verse didnt do the track justice. Yay Area is a decent starter. Gouda, Sick Wid It II, Yee(feat Too Short and Budda) are definitely highlights. She Say She Loves Me feat 8-Ball and Bun B is tight also. I like White Gurl(feat UGK and Juelz Santana) for its creativeness if nothing else. Happy To be Here is an introspective gem that I will give E-40 props for. There are plenty of songs that kill this album's potential to be great. Muscle Cars(feat Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk) and Go Hard Or Go Home are commercial crunk garbage. Do Ya Head Like This is the worst song that E-40 has ever made point blank period! Block Boi(feat Miko and Stressmatic) is about as bland as wheat bread. Im Da Man feat Mike Jones(WHO?) and Al Kapone is painful to listen to. They Might Be Taping has an interesting subject but the poor execution of the song makes it laughable. U And Dat feat T-Pain and Kandi of Xscape is flat out boring and forgettable. Just F***** is hilariously bad as Bosko falsetto singing borders on embarassing and Gimme Head is so stupid it's shameful. Bottom Line: E-40 AND CRUNK DONT MIX! Even though I dont fault E-40 for changing his style around, I do fault him for trying to follow a trend that never fit him or any West Coast rapper for that matter. The production for some of these tracks were cool but the guest appearances are weak as well as a subpar performance from E-40(except for the good songs mentioned). If E-40 wants to remain relevant to his true fanbase he needs to renege on following the crunk populace and get back to what made him special and what made his original fanbase fall in love with him in the first place. Standout Tracks: TELL ME WHEN TO GO, GOUDA, SICK WID IT II, YEE, SHE SAY SHE LOVES ME and HAPPY TO BE HERE.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ambassador of the Bay, November 29, 2006
This review is from: My Ghetto Report Card (Audio CD)
I too am a fan of E-40 and it was interesting to hear how he switched up his style. What he did in this album was produce something not only for his long time fans in the bay, but for the rest of the world. Before this album came out you can point out E-40 because his style is original...one of a kind. In this album he slowed down a bit for others to understand him, but still pay attention for he always has subliminal messages in his rhymes. There are definately songs on this album you can "go dumb" to. I not a big fan of the southern style, but the southern style on the second half of the CD shows versatility. I enjoy E-40s music and the direction he's taking changing the sound and face of hip hop and "westcoast rap".
