I actually ordered this book because I was leading a discussion of "I'll Gather My Geese" for our monthly book club meeting. I thought it would give me some additional information on Hallie Stillwell during her later life. Boy, did it! What I thought would be a discussion that might take twenty or so minutes (so I would need additional material) took an hour. The group had loved reading "Geese" and were full of observations and questions. While none of the participants except myself had read "My Goose is Cooked", it answered many of their questions--and you may have a run on orders. I highly recommend reading the two as a duet. We found that the connection with our own mothers and grandmothers became stronger as a result of Hallie's story. Amazing woman....

It is a must to read "I'll Gather My Geese" first; "My Goose is Cooked" is the sequel. If you are interested in the real story of how the west was tamed, and what kind of a woman it took to deal with the harshness of West Texas in the early 1900, you are in for a real treat with both of these books. Miss Hallie is the real McCoy of a ranch woman. She has filled her autobiography with true stories of how she learned to live in the Big Bend country of Texas on a cattle ranch, chiseled out of the rocks, cacti, and dust of that intimidating land. Neither prickly pear, snakes, contrary horses, obstinate cowboys, nor Poncho Villa got the better of her. Tough as rawhide on the outside, and tender as doeskin on the inside, Miss Hallie is a real person you will come to admire.
Both books are fast reads, yet they give the reader a lot to ponder even in light of our modern and covenient world. Miss Hallie was a lady and a rancher who combined southern gentility and common horse sense to care for her family, and the land she loved.

I bought gas from hattie's daughter out in the desert 20 yrs ago and visited the hattie museum. we couldnt rest until we'd visited all the landmarks mentioned in the big bend national park. i love this country.

I enjoyed this book. I was interested in the history of the Big Bend area of Texas as my husband was born in that area.
