A child talks about her grandmother, who is definitely not like the grannies in storybooks.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 The grandma featured in My Grandma Has Black Hair can't knit or cook, is silly, has a rude parrot, drives a noisy convertible, and prefers to be called Sylvia. She does, however, tell ``wonderful stories'' like the grannies in books. A coincidence is that this grandmother and Kevin's Grandma (Dutton, 1975) by Barbara Williams both grew up in a circus. Listeners and newly independent readers will enjoy hearing/reading about both non-stereotypical grandmothers. The illustrations set a different tone in each book. While Kevin's Grandma is whimsical, this grandmother, done in watercolors and ink, is down to earth. My Grandma. . . has a weak story line, but, used with Williams' book, could instigate a discussion about the similarities and differences of the characters and the illustrations. Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, Idaho

In our times, Grandmas are getting younger and younger--and this book really presents that picture. I hope someone will stock this one soon; it's a terrific representation of my own Mom from my daughter's point of view.
