PreSchool-K-- A fun-filled, happy picture book that would fit in well with any preschool or playgroup storytime. Butterworth's pictures show a versatile grandpa that anyone would love to have. His skills range from riding a motorcycle, building fantastic sand castles, and driving amusement park bumper cars to flower arranging. He even lets his two grandchildren have hose fights in the summer. With Father's Day coming up, you may be wondering what you can get for your amazing Dad who still tours the country on his Harley. This little gem can provide both your Father and your children great pleasure, as they read it to each other (whether in person or over the telephone). Naturally, if the gift comes from your children to your Dad, it will mean even more.

The book features a series of wonderful statements about Grandpa.

"My grandpa is amazing." "He builds fantastic sand castles . . . and he makes exotic drinks . . . and he's not afraid of heights . . . ." This last quality is exhibited by scaling to the end of a snow-covered branch to save a cat. His other good qualities include flower arranging, being a good driver of bumper cars, being able to provide first aid for grandchildren and teddy bears, owning a great motorcycle, being a terrific dancer (especially with grandchildren), being very patient (being calm as a grandchild's sneeze is about to wipe out a model he's working on), and inventing great games (like a waterfight with two hoses and large cardboard boxes for forts).

"It's great to have a grandpa like mine."

As nice as the words are, the illustrations are the strength of the book because they convey a powerful story without any words. Each image comes with a relaxed grandpa who still seems "with it" enough to capture the hearts of his grandchildren. Everyone who sees these happy images will be delighted with them.

I have suggested that this book works well as a gift for grandpas with motorcycles. You can see why. Also, you should probably check off the details I have described above to see if they fit your Father fairly well. Obviously, you should grade the book down for your use to the extent that it doesn't match well enough to be a complete description. In those cases, grandpa still has a few things to learn and enjoy!

Mr. Butterworth has also done a wonderful book called My Dad Is Amazing that you may wish to consider having preschoolers give their Father.

After you have enjoyed this book, you should also think about other things that Grandpa does that grandchildren and children appreciate. Then you could include a list of these along with your own drawings as part of the gift package. Those personalizations will make all the difference on Father's Day. It will be the nicest Thank You a Grandpa could receive.
