Book Description

March 30, 2004

Arnold Palmer driving the 1st green in the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open.

Hale Irwin sinking a cross-country putt on the 72nd hole of the 1990 U.S. Open.

Tiger Woods hitting a 6-iron from the bunker to secure the 2000 Canadian Open.

All three, the experts say, belong among the game's greatest, most memorable shots. But what do the players who hit them think? Ron Cherney, a California dentist with a lifelong passion for the game, decided to find out.

For five years, Cherney and sportswriter Michael Arkush sent out letters to the best players in the world asking what they felt was the greatest shot they ever hit. Amazingly, the responses poured in. Players sent letters, e-mails, faxes, and, believe it or not, a Post-it -- describing what they were thinking and feeling when they pulled off the shot of their lives.

Some were clutch shots, executed before big crowds in big tournaments, others were hit far away from the spotlight, but provided the confidence the players needed to fulfill their dream of competing at the top level.

Cherney and Arkush have compiled 80 of these accounts complete with brief interviews with the players and highlights of their careers. In addition to Palmer, Irwin, and Woods revealing their greatest shot, the collection includes letters from Amy Alcott, Se Ri Pak, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, and many other top players. My Greatest Shot is an irresistible gift for any golf fan.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In 1999, Cherney, a practicing dentist and golf enthusiast, began writing to professional golfers to ask them about the most memorable shots of their careers; a few years later a chance encounter with Arkush, an accomplished sports writer, turned his small cache of response letters into a marketable book proposal. The resulting collection is an enjoyable assortment of golf memorabilia that encompasses the last half-century of the game. The authors, wanting to "preserve the true spirit of the project," decided to reproduce the actual letters they received and supplement them with thumbnail biographies and tidbits of wisdom and experience from the golfers themselves. While most of the players embraced the opportunity to recount the circumstances and emotions surrounding their best shots, several letters were hastily scrawled and offer little in the way of engaging description. Of the 82 letters the authors received, at least half are from retired or lesser-known players, which makes for a colorful and egalitarian selection of participants representing different eras and levels of professional golf, including several legends of the game (e.g., Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus and Louise Suggs, one of the original founders of the LPGA), current stars of the PGA and LPGA tours, some unfamiliar yet distinctive players (such as Robert Landers, a Texas farmer who qualified for the Champions Tour at the age of 50) and a few notable personalities.

This review is from: My Greatest Shot: The Top Players Share Their Defining Golf Moments (Hardcover)
This book shares the pros greatest shots that we mortals that play golf can only dream of. It is terrific to hear the pros describe in their own words, the shots that made an impression on these bigger than life performers who routinely make amazing shots every day. Great reading and a great book to give as a gift to anyone who plays, watches, or dreams about golf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not an Eagle, but a Good Strong Birdie..., June 7, 2008

(VINE VOICE)
Good book, well worth the read, but something short of an eagle or a 5-star rating...like that eagle putt that comes up just short. Still a good effort and good score, but not quite as good as it could be....But who complains about a birdie, right? And there are no complaints about this book. Well worth the read.

The concept is exceptional--tour players describing their own greatest shots and the greatest shots they have seen in their own words--and the cooperation of some of golf's greatest appears to be remarkable.

Those descriptions that were written by hand on personal note cards or stationary were especially interesting. Frankly, even the logos of some of the typed responses were interesting. (All responses are presented exactly as sent or presented to the editors which adds much to the book.)

All in all, a good book, a good read. Can't say it is a great additon to golf literature, but as the years go by, it may become more and more significant to golf history, legend and lore.
