Book Description

April 11, 2007
In this engaging comic novel, Mark A. Thompson spins a cautionary tale about the perils of too much drama, drink, and deceit. Filled with backstabbing, greed, and self-abasement, My Hawaiian Penthouse tells the story of a would-be actor and an elderly millionaire—and their friendship (with privileges).

Growing up in small-town Michigan, Teddy Sears takes his cues from the movies. Taught by his favorite stars (Bette Davis! Barbara Stanwyck! Elizabeth Taylor!), Teddy dreams big: big house, big fame—and a trust fund for life. So with college degree in hand, Teddy heads to Manhattan—only to land in a church production of Godspell. All is not lost, however, for there in the audience sits old-moneyed, blue-blooded, eighty-year-old Harold Armstrong. Before the night’s over, Teddy’s got himself a patron—one who’s worth a million dollars for every year he’s lived on the planet.

Together, Teddy and Harold travel to Hawaii where Teddy convinces Harold to buy a penthouse. Miraculously, at last, Teddy’s future appears secure—that is, until David Findlay arrives. Too pretty and too rich, David Findlay is everything Teddy wants to be—but isn’t. Is David Findlay too good to be true? Can David be trusted alone with Harold? Poor Teddy has his hands full as he works to throw Harold a birthday party and keep David out of Harold’s will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful summer read, May 25, 2007
This review is from: My Hawaiian Penthouse (Paperback)
Mark Thompson has written a story filled with love, heartbreak and laughter. It's a book that takes you out of your own world and into that of his characters. His discriptive writing has you visualizing not only the characters but the settings in which they live and travel.
Would recommend this book to anyone who is reading for the true joy of it. Handed it off to my daughter this morning and she never put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked good fun!, April 29, 2008

This review is from: My Hawaiian Penthouse (Paperback)
Mr. Thompson covers that rare breed of gay man, known to populate only the pockets of wealth that exisit in any city with a large gay population - "The Rent Boy". Using their looks, youth, and wiles, and an overwhelming desire for the "good life", this breed of gay man can be seen with older, wealthy men - playing the game, and paying the rent, by hook, or by crook.
I found this novel to fully illustrate this lifestyle, and the small window of time the "rent boy" has to work with, to make his mark. Mr. Thompson has provided a richly entertaining background, with recognizable characters; I found the novel to be a thoroughly enjoyable read, with a surprise ending that satisfies, and provides a thought provoking message. Looking forward to your next novel, Mr. Thompson!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterically entertaining, October 3, 2007
This review is from: My Hawaiian Penthouse (Paperback)
Mark Thompson's newest novel carries the reader into the lives of Teddy, Harold and David as they embark on a journey together while looking over the Hawaiian sunset. Thompson's knowledge of Hawaii, as well as NYC shine through as he describes the wishes and aspirations of a young man (Teddy) who desperately wants to be part of something more in life yet, Harold and David (his companions) always seem to get in his way.
Read this book and you will find yourself rolling on the floor laughing. Definitely a book to share with a friend.
