5.0 out of 5 stars The Conquering Heroes of 2008, December 16, 2008
This review is from: O My Heart (Dig) (Audio CD)
Mother Mother's sophomore effort is the finest installment in the indie-rock canon since Yoshimi battled the pink robots. O My Heart glistens with meticulous production, thrills you with its unbelieveable attention to harmonic detail, and punishes you for thinking it was going to go in any direction other than where it chooses. Mother Mother jumps styles like it is their job, keeping the listener on his toes while never alientating him. "Bodies" and "Ghosting" are phenominal album tracks, while the title track is an appropriate lead single. The real gems, however, come in the album's most anachronistic tracks: "Hayloft" a churning, skeletal crunch pop tune that reminds you the blood still flows, and "Arms Tonight" a sickly sweet pop tune that ruminates on death as it takes you back to romantic high school summers. More than arguably the finest offering of any musical act of 2008, popular or independent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, August 19, 2009

This review is from: O My Heart (Dig) (Audio CD)
I bought this album after only hearing "Body of Years" a couple times on the radio, I thought that the album would have 1 or 2 other great songs and the rest might eventually grow on me, boy was I wrong. I was instantly addicted to it and the CD has only left the CD player in my car once (to be ripped onto my computer).

The band cleverly manages to disguise their dark and disturbing lyrics with catchy riffs and up tempo, often cheery beats. One of the things that makes this album so great is that you get something new with every song. Not only are the songs vastly different from one another, but the band is able to effortlessly speed up or slow down the tempo in any given song, which means you really have to listen to them in their entirety to get the full effect. With their vast musical instrument repertoire (similar to Arcade Fire), and the harmonizing trio of vocals they seem to have unlimited potential. If marketed correctly these guys could be Canada's next Metric.

Some standout songs: O My Heart, Body of Years, Body, Hayloft, Wrecking Ball, Arms Tonite.

This CD combines all kinds of music, but the thing I like the best about it is, IT ROCKS! When I first heard the music, I loved it, then once I listened to all the lyrics, I was blown away that a group could have such great instrumentation, fabulous mix of vocals and meaningful lyrics. A must-have.

I ordered this CD and a few others after hearing one song on the local college radio station. This album is the only one I love. The songs are finely crafted and there are a varity of styles here. The music is not hard but they do rock. Also some of them have a light hearted darkness to them and all of them are a bit clever.

I love this album! It reminds me of the best and most exciting music from the 70's. Also, it's the loudest CD I have ever heard! I have to turn down the volume on my car stereo to listen to it. Not loud musically, just louder in volume than others.
Anyway, the writing is great, the production is superb, the vocals and the arrangements too.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time top 10, August 25, 2009

This review is from: O My Heart (MP3 Download)
I am always looking for something fresh and new but it seems always to be elusive. Mother Mother's O My Heart is the first new disc I've added in years that I just can't stop listening to it. Every song is great from start to finish and there's so much diversity throughout the album that it never gets boring. The lyrics are as far from formulaic as you can get and I find I have to know what every word is as the stories they tell are captivating. After owning this disc a relatively short time, I think it is one of my top 10 all-time favorites. I bought Touch Up, the band's first effort, after owning Oh My Heart and feel they were in the learning phase on that first disc. But on this second contribution they got it just right. Perhaps even perfect.

I don't know why, but I listen to this album over and over. After hearing "Oh My Heart" I jetted over to eMusic to see if they had the album and they did. One of my current absolute favorites. Catchy hooks, fun beats, interesting stories. I keep thinking that at some point I'll hear everything the record has to offer, but I keep loading it up in my player.

Not as diverse and interesting as The New Pornographers, but more up tempo and 'jazzy'. If you liked The New Pornographers "Challenger" then you should like this. Maybe more so.
