Book Description

085234421X 978-0852344217 August 1, 1999
In October 1810 a twenty-year-old girl in the quiet New England town of Bradford wrote the following words in her journal: 'If nothing in providence appears to prevent, I must spend my days in a heathen land. I am a creature of God, and he has an undoubted right to do with me, as seems good in his sight... He has my heart in his hands, and when I am called to face danger, to pass through scenes of terror and distress, he can inspire me with fortitude, and enable me to trust in him. Jesus is faithful; his promises are precious. Were it not for these considerations, I should sink down with despair.

Ann Hasseltine had received a proposal of marriage from Adoniram Judson, who was shortly to leave for Asia as one of America's first overseas missionaries. And thus commenced one of the greatest dramas of church history - a saga of love, courage, suffering and perseverance.

In this biography Ann is allowed to speak for herself. Sharon James has skilfully woven together extracts from her Memoir and other first-hand accounts with linking narrative in a way that brings Ann's story alive for today and is a powerful testimony to the love, grace and faithfulness of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read!, November 1, 1999

For anyone with a heart for missions or a love for the Lord, this is a great read! Sharon has captured the real spirit that Ann Judson had to reached the unreached with the gospel. The latter half about Adoniram's prison experience was one of those narratives which has you looking forward to going to bed so you can settle in for a good hour of reading!! It is brought to life with letters and diary entries. It very much opened up my mind to the pioneer mission work of the Judson's in Burma and challenged me in my own efforts at witnessing for Christ and serving him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well-done, July 21, 2007

This is a very interesting presentation of the life and ministry of Ann Hasseltine Judson. Through excerpts from her letters and from the Memoir by James Knowles, interwoven with the author's narrative, the reader not only gains a better understanding of Ann Judson's life as a missionary (with Adoniram Judson) in Burma in the 19th century, but also learns of the inner thoughts and feelings of the missionary herself. You will be both challenged and moved by the powerful testimony of this courageous woman who gave her all for her God for the furtherance of the gospel in a distant land. The bibliographical references and index increase the value of this well-done biography.

5.0 out of 5 stars powerfully and joyfully challenging, hugely inspiring, August 30, 2008

This review is from: My Heart in His Hands: Ann Judson of Burma (Paperback)
If you are anything like me (that is, not usually much of a reader) you will speed through this book and be left deeply, most gladly affected by it. I couldn't get the stories I read here out of my mind for weeks. It made me hopeful, it inspired me to greater thoughts and ambition for the Lord, it humbled me to think that I am anything of a real missionary myself, and it fueled more passionate and worthy prayers than I have prayed in too long a time. I wish I could buy a copy for all my dearest friends.

The only down point is the dumb cover (and possibly the title as well- seems to limit the draw of the book to only a female audience)- constrainedly, old school feminine. Oh that the publisher would do a better job next time! As it is, I think my husband would be embarrassed to be caught reading this in a coffee shop, though it would be meat for his spiritual diet as well as it was for mine. So, cover it with a paper bag if you must, but get this book in your own hands and then share it with as many people as you can!
