Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

G.K. Chesterton famously said, "The world is not lacking in wonders, but in a sense of wonder." Especially in an age of cynicism, this sense of wonder, according to Jeremiah, is at the heart of true worship. They are both, he writes, "about coming to the end of our measurements." Jeremiah, pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, Calif., and author of A Bend in the Road and The Handwriting on the Wall, joins the throng of popular pastors (Jim Cymbala, Steve Fry, etc.) writing books about "practicing the presence of God." Worship, he maintains, involves one's whole self; it's about being passionate, obedient and trusting God. These aren't new insights, and they aren't particularly deep. But they are presented here in the endearing and practiced if sometimes rambling voice of an evangelical preacher. He moves easily from theme to theme, sprinkling the material with short stories (including many old chestnuts), Scripture (sometimes engaged superficially, sometimes with more depth) and not a few handy lists of practical tips. His treatment of serious worship themes is a bit shallow: he discusses sacrifice without mentioning the Lord's Supper, and he reviews a Psalm of lament (Ps. 137) while speaking of joyful worship. The worship leader on the front lines of America's "worship wars" debating liturgical style and structure will find little help here, other than the reminder that the details of our worship are less important than the spiritual dynamics that undergird them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonder of a Book, September 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: My Heart's Desire: Living Every Moment in the Wonder of Worship (Hardcover)
The first three chapters are worth the price of this book: contrary to the PW review, Dr. J offers fresh insights into the day-by-day, moment-by-moment experience of God in our daily lives. He is very practical - and biblical. Its not the corporate experience that in the end gets us through the day...its the daily grind slammed against a God who can take it all and help us live through it. This is a great book - from an experienced communicator of the Gospel. A wonder of a book for everyone serious about his/her walk with God.

5.0 out of 5 stars still a favorite, April 26, 2007
By
millhouse (birmingham, al,usa) - See all my reviews
I have owned 3 or 4 copies of My Heart's desire, and given away as many over the past few years.

David Jeremiah is one of my favorite teachers, and we have read a lot of his books, but this one, IMO, is his BEST. (This is Spring 2007). At least, as far as the impact it had on me.

I have read it twice, and listened to the audio series of it, and each time, was broken, and wept, while at the same time some of the most precious worship I have ever experienced.

This book enabled me to allow the Holy Spirit to "catapult" the way I worship My Creator and Savior.

Don't borrow this from the library...this is one to keep.

Probably on my all time Top 10 list.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simply written yet heart-stirring, October 28, 2008
This is a simply written, heartfelt devotional book. In "My Heart's Desire: Living Every Moment in the Wonder of Worship", David Jeremiah draws you in to the pictures he paints in the book. You find yourself in Heaven's throne room, weeping and then rejoicing with John as the Lamb is found worthy to open the book. The awe and wonder which this book inspires is aimed to incite you to greater heights of worship. Indeed all of life is to be lived as a worshiper of Christ.

For those looking for light yet devotional reading, this book will do nicely. It's not all that profound, but the message is straightforward. And yes, its convicting. May your heart for Christ be strengthened as you read this book.
