More About the Author

I am a life-long Chicago native. As a child, I spent many of my "growing up" years working at Deno's Jewelry Store which was owned by my grandparents and also is a major setting in my memoir, My Hero, My Ding. I went to Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, IN for high school and graduated from Purdue University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college, I taught ten years in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Since then, I have been teaching in the Chicago Public School system continuing to inspire the youth in my classroom.

I have always had a love of reading and that fostered my interest in writing. My grandfather was the perfect inspiration to fulfill a dream of writing a book!

Since then, the writing has continued. I have two children's books on the market as well.

The Moose at the Manger is a children's Christmas book about Muse the Moose's magical journey back to that very first Christmas morning. Muse is in awe at seeing Jesus in the manger and is immediately surrounded by love. It is a fun story that keeps Christ is Christmas and shows the importance of a loving family.

Mark the Missing Moose is also a children's book. It was inspired by a parent of a former student. After her stepson committed suicide, she reached out to me to write a story about a child who loses something very important and has to cope with that loss. The hope for Mark the Missing Moose is for children to learn how to open up and speak to others about how they feel and what they are thinking. In this digital world, kids are "well-connected" but often are not saying much to one another. Follow Jimmy in Mark the Missing Moose to see how opening up and letting others in really helps him out!

What an endearing memoir! Tortorello shares her memories of her hero, her grandfather. If every child had a relationship as the one described between the pages of My Hero, My Ding, this world would be a much better place. Very enjoyable read!

"My Hero, My Ding" by Lisa A. Tortorello, a memoir of a Girl and her Grandfather. In this heart warming, endearing and life-touching story this Author shares her most treasured memories - times with her Grandfather. Although he became a jewelry maker and jewelry store owner, he gave her a rare gem, time and love, more precious than any of the jewels he had made. She found a rare treasure in their relationship - a treasure that would last a lifetime. These cherished memories etched a portrait in her life of not just a grandfather, but a hero. He left behind for her a treasure worth far more than gold. This book will touch your heart and reflect to other families to not let disagreements weigh you down, but perhaps be lifted by the spirit of love, that we can all possibly be the "hero" in the lives of those we love.

My Hero, My Ding by Lisa A. Tortorello...might be a funny name, but the story is a sweet, endearing walk down memory lane. This is a collection of stories about a girl and her grandfather and the fun and special bond they shared. Lisa brings her memories to life and lets you enjoy the love, camaraderie and zaniness she shared with her grandfather. The Dings share a special bond that made sense only to them, and that's exactly how they liked it. I encourage anyone that had a special bond with a grandparent, aunt, uncle...to pick up a copy of My Hero, My Ding. Not only will you find Lisa's story genuine but it just might bring back fond memories of your own life...Plus, you'll get to find out what a Ding is...

From memories and her heart, Lisa Tortotello has written her personal memories of a family member.
This is not like the stories that we have heard so many times of horrific heartaches a child has endured because of a family member.
This wonderful story is about a grandfather, who lived and loved the way God intended grandpa's to be; sensitive, loving, and with a wonderful sense of humor.

I truly enjoyed Lisa's thoughtful and funny side as she shared with us, a time in her life that was filled with loving memories of a wonderful man that just happens to be her grandfather.

WHAT A GEM OF A BOOK. AFTER READING THIS LOVELY STORY OF THE SPECIAL BOND BETWEEN GRAND-DAUGHTER AND GRANDFATHER IT MADE ME SMILE AND FEEL REALLY GOOD. HOW FRESHING TO READ THIS AS MOST BOOKS THESE DAYS WRITE ALL ABOUT THE TROUBLES THEY HAVE IN THEIR LIVES. THIS WAS THE OPPOSITE, WRITTEN IN SUCH A POSITIVE AND UPLIFITNG WAY. MADE ME WISH I HAD A RELATIONSHIP JUST LIKE THIS. HOW LUCKY YOU WERE. REMEMBER TO PASS THIS MAGIC ON. WELL DONE TO THE AUTHOR A FIRST NOVEL AND LETS HOPE THERE ARE GOING TO BE PLENTY MORE.

YOUR DING WOULD BE SO PROUD OF YOU.

I really enjoyed My Hero, My Ding by Lisa Tortorello. This story about a grandfather and his granddaughter, is endearing and delightful and brings you into their lives, as if you were one of the family. It made me wish I was part of the Ding Dong Club. If only I could have had a relationship with one of my grandparents, like Lisa had with her grandpa (Ding). I highly recommend this story. It was very uplifting, inspirational and funny.
