4.5 Top Pick

Beautiful! That is the first word that came to mind when I read this fantastic book. From the opening pages, I knew it would be great. I was not disappointed in the least. The story kept me hooked, and took many twists and turns that I never expected. I adored all of the characters, but especially loved Lady Ravenna and Laird Sutherland, two incredibly strong personalities that immediately clash and grate on each other, but soon come together to create some very intense heat. This is my first foray into the worlds that author Victoria Roberts creates, but I can guarantee, it will not be the last. This book has it all. A gorgeous English spy. A handsome Highland Laird with a heart of gold. And more treachery than anyone needs. Who wouldn’t love a book with all that? I certainly did.

When Highland Laird Ruairi Sutherland finds out that he is being required to send his only son to England to be educated by the English, to say he is angry is an understatement. He refuses that decree. As another one arrives, requiring his presence to pay homage to the English King, again, he refuses, and again, he’s not overly thrilled. But when a gorgeous English lass by the name of Ravenna Walsingham arrives on his doorstep claiming to be an English tutor here to teach his son, he is floored. But Lady Ravenna is not all that she seems. She is a well-trained spy for the crown, and she has a mission to uncover whether Ruairi is a traitor to the crown or not. As Ruairi and Ravenna try to fight their attraction to each other, events beyond their control are forming, and a traitor is plotting his (or her) next move. Can Ravenna convince Ruairi to forgive her deceit? Will the traitor be discovered?

First I must say Victoria Roberts is one of my favorite, keeper shelf authors. As well as any of her prior books, this new release did not let me down or disappoint in any way whatsoever! A fantastic first for a new series, and I am very glad the series will continue. After reading this first I wanted to immediately pick up the next one.

The heroine is actually an independent, feisty English spy for the crown and must pose as a governess by orders of the king to determine if the laird of a particular clan is involved in activities against the crown. The hero is a highland laird who wants to hang onto and pass Scottish traditions down through generations. After all, they are Scottish Highlanders, why do they need to know English cultures. The heroine also has three younger sisters, of which one is as feisty as the heroine. The laird is a widower with a young son and cares deeply for his clan and the people he is responsible for.

Mystery, sexy passionate romance, laughter, tears, drama, and action make this book a one sit read. Not actually knowing what exactly to expect but being very surprised when actually meeting the laird, imagine what the heroine might say in response to being very attracted to him, if she thinks the laird can’t speak and doesn’t understand the English language. And the Laird is so surprised by her actual appearance he is speechless when he sets eyes on her, which is why she believes he doesn’t understand anything she says. Oh my goodness! You find yourself talking to them both trying to guide them on the right track. There are also other twists and turns and unexpected actions throughout the book.

About the Story: Lady Ravenna Walsingham, a spy, follows in her father and uncle’s steps, working for the Crown. Sometimes, she wishes she wasn’t a spy. This particular mission was one such case. But go where the King sends her, she must. Disguised as a governess, she travels to Scotland to spy on Laird Ruairi Sutherland with the ruse that the King is sending her to tutor his son in English because he hadn’t sent his son to England to learn the King’s tongue. The King sent her to see if the lairds in Scotland were plotting for war with England. And frankly, he wanted to make an example of this particular laird.

Once arrived she finds the laird unable to speak English, an unbelievable situation. But Laird Ruairi was playing his own games. He spoke English well enough. (Below is a humorous scene when Ravenna blurts out what’s in her mind thinking the laird doesn’t understand!) Ravenna finds these Highlanders may be built like trees, but they were learned, living in wildness where their personalities matched the elements. She noted many misconceptions she had about Scots. Laird Ruairi had a lovely home, with a charming son. Determined not to become involved with this extremely broad-chested, handsome kilted laird, she concentrated on teaching his son English. But all her focus could not save her from his kiss. His intention was to see her in his bed.

~Excerpt~

The last of the summer blooms lined the path. Yellow and red flowers led to a wait-high stone wall where the laird had stopped and was waiting for her. She walked up beside him and looked over the wall. the white waves of the ocean crashed below on jagged rocks. She inhaled the fresh saltwater air and closed her eyes, letting the breeze comb through her loose tendrils.
