I grabbed this book because I am married to an Egyptian man and the title caught my eye. Unfortunately I couldn't even finish the book. It was so depressing. Every story was the same theme...women who used to have lives, hopes and dreams marrying and Egyptian and move to Egypt to have their worlds shrink in around them. Over and over the book seems to say...but they got used to it...oh I found it so horrible!!!!!!!!

I bought this book because my boyfriend is Egyptian and I am American. I know that there are very big cultural differences between us, so I wanted read about other relationships that were similar in nature to see how they made things work between them. Although each woman's story is different, they all had one thing in common...they all loved their Egyptian husbands. Albeit, not always easy, but they made it work through the ups and downs. I loved how committed they were to one another. I could not put the book down and I am looking forward to Annelies's next book! I hope it comes out soon!!!

This book tells the life stories of 14 European women and one American who married Egyptian men and who now live at least part-time in Egypt. Not only are individual life stories fascinating, the detailed pictures of life in Europe and in Egypt from the immediate post-WW II period through the 60s and 70s give you a sense of the day-to-day experience of those years in a very personal way. I was enormously impressed by the resilience of these women, the flexibility and enterprise of their husbands, and also in most cases the warmth and openness of the families that welcomed them to Egypt.

I chose this rating because it didn't give me the information which I expected.
It didn't go into the relationships of the couples. It was simply a list of what they did,
and the fact that
they kept going back forth between Germany and Egypt. The book was not very structured and
thus made it difficult to gain any real insight into the advantages and disadvantages of an intercultural marriage.
Altogether I found it rather boring.
