Anna Grayson Spencer saw life in a certain manner until someone she loved died and willed his magic to her. Gray went from human to magekind and needed someone to help her learn how to deal with this new found life. The man for the job is Durian a warlord's assassin set up to help Gray not only by helping her embrace the magic but learn to use it against the forces of evil trying to kill off the human race but first she has to swear fealty to him - seriously?

Gray has lost so much in her life and walked away from her family burying secrets about herself so deep even she forgot about them, but Durian is going to open and heal those wounds and keep her safe especially from herself.

The more time Gray spends with Durian the more drawn she is to him and realizes that he is the missing piece she has been searching for. Their voyage involves fighting the darker side but even that moves them closer together as their two souls become one.

What an engaging story and such wonderful characters that keep the excitement moving from page to page you will not want this book to end. The storyline is easy to follow and well laid out which for some is a challenge with this genre. A great author knows how to tell a story everyone can follow and Ms. Jewel has done just that.

My Immortal Assassin was dark and sexy with intense tension building in the romance and I really liked both of the leads: the good demon assassin Durian and the and the woman, Gray, who escaped her imprisonment by a power hungry mage but who through the final act of a sacrificial victim is human no more. Even though the pair start on uneven footing, I really liked that Gray has hidden strengths which develop to the point that she truly becomes an equal to Durian who has centuries of experience to draw from.

I also really like the intensity of the emotion that stone cold killer Durian comes to feel for Gray - is it the "mine" which is the keystone of PNR but with the twist that Kin are so connected that others are drawn into the attraction. Jewell however never crosses that line physically keeping the romance one on one but occasionally Jewell does bring a mental voyeur along for the ride or to kick the sensual tension up another notch. But while Jewell does walk the edge of kink for the most part, the romance does cross over into territory which may make some readers uncomfortable, since demons are irresistibly drawn to humans, and though it is forbidden without permission, they are only fertile when they shift into their natural form and the urge to shift while mating is strong.

A newbie to Jewell's series could read My Immortal Assassin since the heroine, Gray, gives a good initial summary about this world of mages and demons when she tells Durian what she `knows' about demons and there is also a glossary to clear up terms. There are two other books in the series before this one My Wicked Enemy and com/My-Forbidden-Desire-Immortal-ebook/dp/B00290SZ7Y">My Forbidden Desire both with demons falling for the 'enemy' and one more coming soon My Dangerous Pleasure (the slightly insane Iskander's book). Anna Grayson Spencer, now known as just Gray, is seeking revenge on the mage who ruined her life and killed her sister. While attempting to murder the mage responsible, she is intercepted by Durian. Durian is an assassin who works for a powerful warlord. Durian takes Gray in and in return she swears fealty to him. They begin to find themselves the target of attacks, and set out to find who is responsible. The attraction between them grows as the action builds, and Durian discovers he might be falling for the girl he initially deemed not his type.

My Immortal Assassin takes readers into a very complex world. The author does provide a glossary in the front which I referenced on more than one occasion. While I don't think you must read these in order, I do think it would give readers a clearer take on the magic and characters the series contains. Even with moments of confusion over the terminology, I still really liked this one. Solid writing with loads of action.

The characters were strong and well developed. Gray was a spunky female heroine even though she had faced many tough situations in her recent past. Durian was the classic damaged hero that I've come to love so much. I loved watching the characters overcome not only present obstacles, but also past ones that were haunting them. I also enjoyed how well the main characters complimented each other. Gray's sense of humor started to bring out a side of Durian that I'm not even sure he knew he had. Another huge win with me was the lack of angst in the relationship between Durian and Gray. The typical power struggle that seems to be present in so many romance novels wasn't there. The characters trusted each other, and were willing to take a step back when the other advised it was best.... While I admit angst is good for building the sexual tension, the lack of conflict between these two main characters definitely didn't have a negative effect. It was present and intense.

This book does contain some dark moments, but Gray's sarcastic wit does an excellent job of lightening the mood. I'm really excited to backtrack and read the first two books of this series, and continue with the next. Read more ›

I love Carolyn Jewel's Witches series and have been waiting for this third installment for so long. It doesn't disappoint. The world of the Kin and the Mages is still violent and treacherous. I feel for the Mageheld demons even as they carry out their masters' orders. The heroine 'Gray', has been kidnapped and violated by the evil mage Christophe but escapes him through the dying efforts of one of his mageheld demons. She is on the run and finds herself falling under the spell of Durian, a demon assassin. We know Durian from previous novels and it's fabulous to see his HEA. He deserves it as he's been through some very tough times. As usual with these demons, the sex is hot and dangerous and the witch will have to trust him with more than her life to get through. I highly recommend this series for lovers of Paranormal Romance (especially sexy demons!)
