Part memoir and part case study, My Indecision Is Final, is the story of Goldcrest Films, an independent British film studio, which had immense success from 1976-1987 and then fizzled into obscurity after a string of failures and miscalculations. Though written with exhaustive details about the story of Goldcrest, the book raises many questions about independent studios. Can an independent studio succeed? Once there is a hit, how can success be properly managed? How important is leadership and what kind of leadership is needed for the film industry? In times of conglomeration, and without a distribution channel, can a studio truly remain independent? Is it incumbent on independent studios to foster new talent, or should they only work with established filmmakers? Finally, in the case of Goldcrest, how did their success lead to their own demise? By looking at the history of Goldcrest, My Indecision Is Final focuses on, and often answers those questions on the micro level; it is left to the reader then, to extrapolate how the problems that Goldcrest faced have been echoed throughout the film industry, to studios and independent productions. The strength of the book lies in the questions it raises and the examples given of how one group of men handled their studio.
