5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, January 7, 2005
This review is from: My Inspiration - Music of Brazil (Audio CD)
I'd been searching for a current Bossa Nova album to rival Getz Gilberto. This one is it! Though it swings more and has more be-bop driven classical guitar improvisations by Byrd, it is just as sensuous and appealing. Every other song contains vocals reminiscent of Astid Gilberto but much edgier and the other ones are sax driven in the style of Getz. Absolutely great musicianship. The rhythm section led by Lubambo on rhythm bossa nova nylon string guitar couldn't be better. Great bass. Great percussion. This is a genuinely great recording and great set of performances. Have I said it is great?

5.0 out of 5 stars Byrd & Bossa Nova Head Toward 40, November 16, 2000

This review is from: My Inspiration - Music of Brazil (Audio CD)
Charlie Byrd joined with saxophonist Stan Getz to popularize Brazil's bossa nova music in 1962. This effort, recorded 37 years later, shows he's just as good as ever. With another great saxophonist, Scott Hamilton, Byrd presents some fine Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes, along with bossa nova versions of songs by others -- including himself, bassist Bob Haggart and some guy named Chopin! Drummer Chuck Redd appears on this CD playing the vibraphone, and Maucha Adnet provides some hauntingly beautiful vocals a la Astrud Gilberto. Once again, Byrd and bossa nova make a pleasant combination.
