Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Foley's follow-up to My Wicked Marquess and My Dangerous Duke fizzles melodramatically. Worldly diplomat Jordan Lennox, the earl of Falconridge, is an agent of a secret order sworn to protect the king. Mara Bryce, Lady Pierson, is a wealthy young widow and not at all interested in finding a new husband—but Jordan was her first love, who asked her to wait for him and then disappeared. Twelve years later, they meet again and sparks fly. Separated from Mara by his duty and wracked with regrets, Jordan wonders whether destiny has given them a second chance, but he is on another mission against a dark cult, and his decision to involve Mara endangers her even as he woos her. Characters are thinly drawn and inconsistent, and after a promising beginning, both romance and spy story become contrived. (Apr.)

Lord Falcolnridge is a member of the Inferno Club which to the public seems like a club for debauchery and shenanigans but is actually a cover for the Order whose members are spies sworn to protect the King of England and their country from the Promethian's. When Jordan, Lord Falcolnridge is just twenty two he meets and falls in love with Mara. For Jordan this is a difficult time because he is about to be sent off on his first mission for the Order. So he leaves and never writes to Mara fearing that his letters might somehow endanger her with his enemies. He returns one year later to find Mara married to another man.

Flash forward twelve years, Jordan has just returned to London to work on a case for the Order. While at an auction Jordan and Mara run into eachother. Both experience strong feelings of anger towards the other. Jordan is still angry that she didn't wait for him and has held a torch for her for the twelve years he's been gone. While Mara has never quite gotten over Jordan and doesn't understand how he could have left and never wrote her. She is also mad at herself because she had a disasterous marriage and the only good thing that came from it is her son Thomas and her close friendship with the Prince Regent.

Eventually Jordan and Mara become lovers. Both have always carried strong feelings for the other and they just don't want to be apart anymore. The only problem with this is that Mara never fully trust Jordan because she senses that he is hiding something from him. Jordan, is hiding secrets from Mara but it's because he is in the Order. He doesn't want her harmed for knowing too much.

I really had a hard time finishing this book. There were a few times I put it down not wanting to pick it up again.

I don't claim to know all the ins and outs of historical romance, as I've been reading the genre for less than a year, but I believe I know enough to say the Gaelen Foley does not constrain her writing with boundaries. There were several things I read in this book that I didn't think I'd ever read in a historical romance novel. I was caught off guard multiple times, and as a reader I loved that.

More so, and probably my favorite thing about this book is the men. Falconridge of this book is heartbreaking. The man gets under the skin and breaks your heart. He's so well written. Beyond him are his brother warriors. As does J.R. Ward and Lara Adrian with their series, the camaraderie you will experience in Foley's writing will charm you into become a loyal fan.

With true camaraderie, steamy love making in royal places, breath holding suspense, and a side romance that leave you anticipating books to come this is a must read for all historical romance lovers. Gaelen Foley is a born story teller, and I believe that the best is yet to come from this series.

I leave you with this... Emily. I can't wait!

This is the third book from the Inferno Club and Gaelen Foley comes through again!!

Jordan Lennox, the Earl of Falconridge, is a member of the secret society known as the Inferno Club. The members of this club are some of the most notorious members of the London Aristocracy who are able to cover the covert operations to keep King and country safe. Jordan met Mara right after he completed his initial training in the Club and before he could see where their budding romance could take them, he is sent on an international mission.

Mara instead of waiting for Jordan to return, marries the wrong man and has to suffer through a marriage to a drunk. The only good thing her husband gave her before he died was her son Thomas. She dotes endlessly upon him and unlike most mothers of the aristocracy, she takes an active role in raising him. Thinking that she's finally earned her freedom to live life as a wealthy widow... Guess who pops up? Of course, Jordan.

Now he's back and he wants to become reaquainted with Mara. In the interm, he is ordered to install himself within the Regent's inner circle inorder to sniff out an enemy spy. Unfortuneatly, this means using Mara and her connections seeing as how the Regent is her son's godfather.

With the enemies closing in and at the worst possible time, Mara discovers Jordan's duplicity. She feels betrayed and unwittingly becomes a pawn for the enemies to exploit in ways that force her to betray Jordan and other agents in the Inferno Club. It becomes a race to save lives and maintain the covers of the secret agents and caught in the middle is the absolute love that Jordan and Mara share.

I love Gaelen Foley's books because of the twists and turns that she throws in.

It started out interesting (won't spoil) but about 2/3s through the book, there are some times you just want to shake Mara. Like really? Are you this much of a moron? And then she does something that you're just like...wow...It's incredible how selfish you are. I mean, Yes. Gaelen tried to make it about the instinct to protect...fine. I get that. But seriously...an entire country's safety...I mean damn...

I liked her for about 2/3s of the book, but then I just HATED her. I had the hardest time finishing because I just couldn't read on as she kept making mistake after mistake. I get that she's supposed to be flawed and human...but Jordan, IMO, needed a stronger female. They talk about the "Simpering debs" and how he needs a real woman, like Mara, the Widow, but Mara was the only one I would flag as "simpering". I didn't admire anything about her, and I tried. I liked that she loved her son...but even that grew tired. And let's not forget when she was 18, she was so desperate to escape, she just let a man rescue her the first time...any one that came along. And then as an "adult" at 30...she let herself be tricked by her friend and then blackmailed? And needs a man to rescue her....again. I mean geez. I would've at least confirmed for sure that what this guy was saying was true. HELLO. Known liar? I found myself wishing Bloodwell had killed her. :X

Also...was I the only one that noticed that Thomas went from babbling incoherent noises, to full on sentences without baby babble, back to baby babble and then into partial sentences with baby jargon? Like what the...

Of the inferno series, I think the only heroine I like is Kate!

I'm over Mara's insecurities and doubts and her childish behavior.
