Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A newly illustrated edition of a 1979 title (Warne). Abbey, her parents, and her grandmother spend every summer on an island off an unspecified northeastern coast. She and the energetic woman explore the island, pick blueberries, watch ducks hatch, swim in dark sea pools, tell cloud stories, or just "talk about things." This patient, kind woman also bakes cookies, tells about constellations, sails with Abbey, and makes her a special flowered sleeping bag. Even though the family returns home at the end of the summer, and her grandmother once again does "city things," Abbey always thinks of her on the island. The child's first-person narrative employs simple, direct prose filled with childlike images. A sense of fun and good humor is evident, too. The vivid, full-color illustrations, rendered in watercolor and colored pencil, bring the island to life, and the details of each vignette are clearly evident in the well-composed pictures. Readers will treasure this intergenerational portrait. --Cynthia K. Richey, Mt. Lebanon Public Library, Pittsburgh, PA
